The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
Perhaps this is because of the amount of times we have actually discussed these things... perhaps it's due to the amount of people with simular opinions, no real unbiased objections to anything.
Perhaps it's to do with arguements that seem pointless, because no one is going to agree, because everyone is so stubborn.
Or perhaps it's to do with the society of the forums, and the way our family has expanded and changed.
No doubt, the next person who will read this after me will be someone who has not been around here as much as some of us. This isn't a bad thing that more people are coming into the forums, but it is a bad thing that we see less and less of the older foggers.
And because of this, because we're getting bored with the same argument over and over, it's time for a change.
Can a perfect society exist? Where race, sex, opinion or view makes no difference to the amount of respect a person is given? Only equality can lead to a perfect society, and these forums are certainly not equal.
Turn your head. A notable wrote this topic. This is because he has been voted to be above and beyond all other posters. If a society was composed entirely of notables, then perhaps it would work. But not like this. I doubt even all the notable will ever read this.
You are a just arrived today. In a few weeks, if you write 300 posts and include 10,000 words or so, you will become an apparent regular. The content of your posts is ignored. Perhaps this is right, but then, perhaps your status should be ignored entirely. Experience is a must, yes... but perhaps that should be learnt through time, not through pre-written rules. I'm also not saying that we should all be encouraging newbies, I think they should go through all they need to be able to write their opinions clearly and wisely. The Fog Prime also has improved... but only because less people are posting. People who have been here a while no longer post so many topics.
Staff? Of course they should be put above us. They run this site, and our respect is demanded, and rightfully so. That's the only real good that has come from this.
So what am I really saying? Abolish notables? Abolish the regular system altogether and go back to being on the same level?
I know we all see people differently, without the newbie/regular/notable status anyway... it's only the people I enjoy the company of, not the whole race of regulars.
So perhaps I am saying that. Perhaps the direction we should take is not forwards, but backwards. Back tracking to where it all went wrong. A new start, perhaps?
This of course is just my opinion, and I see no more of it. All I want now is yours.
d-o-u-g-h-n-u-t
let's try it in a Sesame Street stylee.
oooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! is that a choccy donught gimme it now.
> It's a 5 star (system addict!) topic
Funny... I'm just listening to their Greatest Hits album...
Of course there is that “old guard” that may feel annoyed that what was once a small community is now expanding massively.
Of course some newbies will post nonsense, just as some regulars do (me being one of them).
But I think a good mix is healthy, it represents the world at large. There will always be those that post/act sensibly all the time, those that goof around and moon the general public and those that are incapable of anything but mindless brainfarts.
People use the forums for different reasons. I use them all for different reasons. The DVD forum is where I hide my somewhat serious posts and discuss movies, music and books because I thrive on those.
I don’t really use the FOGs much, because gaming has become less and less important to me as I’ve grown older.
The Life forum is where I go to seriously discuss matters that I feel affect the world around us. I get wordy, philosophical and very political there.
But I enjoy that, I enjoy that one forum is different to the other, some forums here hardly anyone go in and it maintains a decent level of relevance and topic-sticking.
The Chat has become inane at times, but that’s life.
The Prime is 98% gaming related and the Life is getting back to football now the season has started.
Whatever you want to discuss, there is an area there.
I’ll admit I go to another forum when I feel the need to discuss political matters with a lot more seriousness, but all in all, SR offer something for everyone.
We know each other, as proved in the “Copularity Pontest” thread, a nice sense of community.
Long live The Forums!
You come back refreshed and full of new ideas.
The FOG has definitely gone down hill recently. The problem is, there are just far too many newbies around who are either stupid, ignorant, Nintys (;-)) or illerate. Most f them are completely unable to hold a conversation (Nintendo Steve for example) and just end up annoying everyone.
Another problem is, the FOG just isn't about the FOG anymore. There are loads of topics that have nothing to do with gaming, things that belong in other forums. This is a gaming forum, not wrestling, football or Limp Bizkit vs Slipknot!
Actually, I think I'll go as far as saying, the FOG is boring these days. There are hardly any gaming topics and the FOG Prime is often dead, and the FOG Chat is full of tosh.
My suggestion? Abolish the FOG Chat. It's choking the real FOG and FOG ethics. I also think we should restrict the number of newbies signing up, but I know that will never happen.
I was voted one, because there was once a time when you all loved me. ;-)
Anyway here's a thought, WAY too much programming involved to make it a reality though, probably.
But I can't help but think that being able to search for certain members most recent posts would help.
I spend too long looking for really good posts, ones that I want to reply to. If I could search for opinions of those that write posts worth reading - not necessarily that I'd agree with (Turbonutter's for instance always cause an arguement worth reading ;-) )
Another option could be the ability to 'rate' a thread. It's a 5 star (system addict!) topic, I'll read it. If it only gets one star, I can assume it's complete spam, and not worth reading.
well if you dont like a person just ignore them
