Your favourite ten games from all the way back to when computers were first constructed, to present day. Or if you like, 10 that have impressed you most with their originality, playability, or just pure quality. You can put down a series of games as one choice if you want.

I realise this thread belongs in the classic games forum, but cherynobyl has more visitors than that place :D

Ok, I'll go first, in NO particular order :

1) Mooncresta (ZX Spectrum) - Galaxian style 2D shoot em up, introduced me to the fast paced world of shoot em ups, a genre that seems to have died. Dodging alien ships and millions of round bullets while trying to annihilate your enemies. Very simple in every way, but playable to the extreme - evidence that graphics and sound do not make a game.

2) Flashback (Amiga/Megadrive/SNES) - 2D action/adventure/platformer featuring a superb plot, realistic game physics, a ton of missions to complete, fluid graphics, and truckloads of atmosphere. From the developers of the classic 'Another World', which was also way ahead of its time. Flashback was sequelled but the next in the series was at best unremarkable. Another genre that seems to be all but dead.

3) Syndicate (Amiga,PC) - Gave birth to the term 'squad based shooter'. Take your group of 4 cyborg mercenaries on increasingly dangerous missions in the violent futuristic blade-runner-esque underworld. Gun down gang members, enemy cyborgs, cops or just innocent people, depending on what sort of commander you are. Was succeeded by syndicate wars, which I haven't actually played yet.

4) Monkey Island 1 + 2 (Amiga,PC) - Introduced me to the point and click genre, and stirs many fond memories of 3 headed monkeys and other craziness. Some may argue that these games were boring, but they really made you use your head - you'd find yourself thinking up solutions while eating lunch, watching telly or whatever. Several other point and clicks of note are Day of the Tentacle, and the Indiana Jones series. Neither beat the monkey island games though.

5) Super Mario World (SNES) - My favourite Mario game of all time. 96 levels in all if I remember correctly. This came as close to perfection as any game could get in my opinion, and singlehandedly converted me to a nintendo fan virtually over night.

6) Zelda : A Link to the Past (SNES) - First RPG I played. Brilliant storyline, great japanese style cartoony graphics. Hundreds of locations to visit. Atmosphere to the max. Great.

7) DOOM Series (PC) - Easily the games I have spent most time playing, be it on the single player campaigns, Multiplayer LAN/Modem or creating new levels for it. Way ahead of its time, atmospheric, incredibly well designed and was the first game to make me realise PC's were not just for people working in offices. Superb.

8) Command & Conquer + Red Alert Series (PC) - Introduced me to the RTS genre, and still in my opinion the best of their type. The red alert games were slightly better than the C&C ones in my opinion, as the weaponry and storylines were more plausible and closer to modern day events. The balance between all the structures and units in the games is nothing short of remarkable. Multiplayer is a nasty tactic creating dream.

9) Goldeneye/Perfect Dark (N64) - The surprise hit of the decade, goldeneye shot to classic status instantly, and still holds its own against other shooters of today in my opinion. Perfect Dark, though containing a weaker single player campaign, took multiplayer to new levels, and with all those excellent weapons, arenas, characters and options, you could create just about any game of your liking.

10) Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City (PS2, PC, XBOX) - Jumped from fun 2D killfest to the creation of a multigenre shooter/driver which allowed an unprecedented amount of freedom. Feel what it is like to be a mafia gangster with little or no morals and a bag full of guns.

Quite a lot there, I must be bored :D

10) Fifa 2003 - A great football game the best ever. ( I haven't played winning eleven 6) Over 10 000 players 350 teams and 16 of the worlds top leagues.
9) The Sims - The great life simulator makes it into my top ten.
8) The legend Of Zelda Wind Waker - A huge nintendo classical adventure. Truly stands out in the games market.
7) Super monkey ball - The only gamecube game i have left from the four i got at the launch date , I will never get sick of the chimps running round in hampster balls.
6) Burnout 2 - A class racing game Everything you could want i love it.
5) Hitman 2 - A brilliant stealth game cheaper and better than splinter cell.
4) Animal crossing - A great game when you feel free to do anything you want. Very addictive, better than the sims because you can walk over 5 steps from you're house.
3) Soul Calibur 2 - Spectacular fighting game. Hugely addictive everlasting game just to good. A good old fashioned arcade run or missions whatever you want just this is a must get.
2) Championship manager 4 - This isn't many peoples cup of tea but i think this is a highly addictive football game. I come home play on CM4 have dinner play on Cm4 go to bed. Everyone thinks this game is garbage and dosen't deserve to exist, but i think it is a magnificent piece of art. Now it has a 2d pitch to watch the match(es)
1) The legend of zelda ocarina of time - All time legend to big to good and worth what its selling for. A huge adventure I love this not only for the gameplay but the memories. Hyrule field is all clear. I have had this for four years and i am stuck about 2/3 through the game THE EVIL WATER TEMPLE.

Yeah, I'd love a copy. If you've got any Acorn/Archi emulators and games, I'd love them as well. I remember Chocks Away that you mentioned Hedfix.

Good choice. It was on the Acorn Archimedes, A440, A540, A3000, A5000 and Acorn RISC PC.

Did you know there's a sequel? It was called MarsQuake. I have it if you'd like a copy.

yeah, I remember those - the first one was a bit pants, but the second two were brilliant - like you say, it'd create tracks using words, leading to childish profane track names. ah great.

I really can't pick 10 of the best games of all time. I will put 10 games that mean something to me. They are in no particular order.

1) Maze Chase (Spectrum)

Back in the days of the Spectrum 1, this game came with the computer. It was the first game I ever mastered. There was one particular day when everyone got annoyed at me after spending 6 hours on the same game when my friends wanted me to go out and do stuff. It only had 8 levels but it never ends and I racked up a huge score.

2) The Sonic Series (Megadrive, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Mega CD, GBA, Master System, Game Gear. I've probably missed something but I can't remember)

Sonic has to be my all time favourite video game character. The days used to disappear when I sat in front of my TV playing Sonic games. To this day, I still play the Sonic games even though I've completed them loads of times. I think it's a possibility that I've completed Sonic 1 over a hundred times, and yet I still play it today. I've never played a Sonic game that I didn't like.

3) Super Monaco Grand Prix and Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco Grand Prix 2 (Megadrive)

These games helped solidify my love for motor racing. Back in those days, I was just being introduced to the world of F1 and these games mean a lot to me. Over the years, these games have become easy to me and I always use the 7 speed manual gearbox, the hardest one to use. The first game in the series was great as I could get to the best car in just 3 races, something which my friends couldn't believe when I showed them. The second game will always have a special meaning to me. In 94, I was watching the San Marino Grand Prix when Ayrton Senna crashed into the wall and died. For some reason, maybe because I was younger, this hit me fairly hard. I felt I needed to do something so I played Ayrton Senna's Grand Prix 2 for almost a whole day to get it out of my system.

4) Sensible Soccer Series (Amiga, PC, Megadrive)

This game was probably my first big rivalry with someone. My friend said he was the best at Sensible Soccer but I was not going to let him get away with that. We kept this rivalry going for years as we demolished teams that got in our way. Strangely though, we never actually had a match one on one to see who was the best. Some great memories include completing the Sensible World of Soccer demo because you weren't allowed to lose one game and you controlled some rubbish team in the Italian league. Also, Sensible Soccer on the Megadrive, I scored probably 20 goals on 45 minutes because I kept stealing the ball and attacking meaning the ref couldn't blow the whistle. We all had a laugh at the final score after it went beyond 50 in a 4 minute match.

5) Formula One Grand Prix Series (Amiga, PC)

I can't believe the many hours that myself and my friends spent on this game. We staged some major crashes and won some spectacular races. We found a editor and updated the cars and drivers. I own all 4 of these games and they mean a great deal to me. It was one of the first games I got for my PC. Great days.

6) The PGA Tour Golf Series (Megadrive)

It was around this time that my friends introduced me to the world of golf. I wasn't particular good at golf for a few years but I got very good at these games. A lot of my friends complained about the bar that you use to hit the ball but I never had any trouble with it. I think I'm still the only one that has played these games in my house that has got a hole in one.

7) Monkey Island Series (Amiga, PC)

This is still probably the only game I've ever played that I could walk around for hours and hours trying to solve a puzzle and the answer is staring me right in the face. It is great to play and is full of humour. I own the entire series and I still remember how to finish them.

8) Moonquake (Acorn? Archi? Not sure which one it was now.)

Moonquake was basically Bomberman with reactors. The higher levels had reactors, some blew up with one bomb blast, some blew up with two. If you blew the reactor, everything blows up. I spent many school hours playing this game, even though I wasn't allowed to. There was s time when everyone was watching the Christmas play and I was sitting in the computer playing this game. Later on in my school life, we had a competition to see who was the best in the school. I won, which was very good for me.

9) The Lotus Series (Amiga, Megadrive, whatever else it was on.)

Amazingly, this is yet another racing game and this time I did compete against my friends. It was always very close. Lotus 3 on the Amiga was probably my favourite. We used to create our own tracks using our names or just making it as difficult as possible. I would, most of the time, come out of it the winner. Unfortunately, my brother lent the game out to someone, along with Indy Heat and Monkey Island for the Amiga and I never got them back. If anyone does have a copy of Indy Heat, Lotus 3 and the second disk of Supercars 2, let me know please as I really want these back. Back to the game, I remember sitting and watching two people racing each other on Lotus 1 on the Megadrive and one of them was lagging behind. He needed to get the phone so he handed the joypad to the nearest person which happened to be me. I cut the gap and won the race. No one could believe it. I suppose greatness comes naturally.

10) Dune and Dune 2 (Amiga, PC)

I feel this should be on my list as it was the first wierd game I played. Dune was totally wierd to me back in the old days and creeped me out in a strange kind of way. Dune 2 was totally different and I enjoyed this game immensely. My cousin used to spend hours playing this game. My favourite house was Harkonnen as they had that Devastator tank that kicked everything. Truly great days.

Well, that's my 10. There are so many more I could mention like Super Off Road, Gran Turismo, Virtual Pool/Snooker, Colin McRae Rally, Ecco the Dolphin, Road Rash, Championship Manager, Settlers, Transport Tycoon and more.

Thanks for reading.

In no real order.

1. Goldeneye-(N64)
My first N64 game and love it as much as the first day I had it. Great single player, great multiplayer, great everything. This game is superb.

2. Mario 64- (N64)
One of the first N64 games I owned. The level design, the characters, the music just classic!

3. Metroid Prime-(GC)
Outstanding. nuff said.

4. Wario Ware Inc.- (GBA)
Fast, frantic and very strange! I enjoy Wario Ware for its quickfire microgames which test skill and reaction speed. All squeased onto a tiny GBA cart too. I play it on the bus most days.

5. Rollercoaster Tycoon Series.- (PC)
When I go on this game, I spend hours on it. Watching your park grow and thrive and being able to add your personal touches makes this one of my faves.

6. Splinter Cell- (GC)
Im only playing through it once. For me, thats enough. But its brilliant all the same.

7. F-Zero GX- (GC)
Despite its very tough challenges, its fast and furious. Got it a few weeks ago and really like it. Even though im have to replay races over and over again before I get a decent place.

8. Burnout 2- (GC)
A great racer, superb multiplayer and so much stuff to unlock. Makes Burnout 1 look like a mere demo.

9. Pilotwings- (N64)
Just being able to fly in a gyrocopter persueded me to buy this. Im really looking forward to the sequal, even though its going to take ages.

10. The Ledgend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker- (GC)
New gen graphics putting people off? sod em'.

Yeah. 3D now.

I'm glad they waited this long until the technology was ready.
It would NEVER have worked back in the days of Worms 2 when people were telling them to do it.

In a way ti's a pity they kept the graphical style from Worms 2.
It would've been really cool if they'd resurrected the front end of Worms United (which had the best logo and theme tune) and done the graphical style the same as the FMV sequences, complete with sniffing homing missiles! :-)
