Microsoft, by way of announcing its Xbox strategy for Christmas in the UK, has revealed today that there will be no immediate axe taken to the retail price of the console before 2004.
Expectations were high following Nintendo's slashing of GameCube to £79.99 that Microsoft would follow with a price cut of its own prior to Christmas, especially since Nintendo's machine has begun to outsell the Xbox for the first time in months (2 to 1).
However, Microsoft has instead chosen to place its yuletide hopes in a bundle that features the console, Halo and Midtown Madness 3 and a voucher for two months' subscription to Xbox Live. This Xbox bundle will retail for £139.99, on shelves from today.
Industry watchers will be following Sony's, Nintendo's and Microsoft's Christmas fortunes in the UK closely, in particular the clash between GameCube and Xbox.
While Sony is in an unassailable position and likely to do very well with EyeToy this Christmas, Nintendo is looking stronger than it has for some time, sales likely to be driven further by the arrival of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! on November 14. Let the battle commence.
Hmmmm exciting.
SSX3 will be the snowboarder to own.

And the gamers who lap up such wonders as Sexy Beach 2.
One of my best friends is Japanese, its nothing about Japanese as a nationality you stupid moronic pig headed toilet scum.
Japanese gamers are stupid? F*** you! You're talking about the gamers that demanded the sort of quality from an RPG that gave us the modern Final Fantasy series. The same gamers that drive the games designed by the likes of Namco, Capcom, Sega and, lest we forget, Nintendo!
Stupid gamers? How about this - you're a stupid f***ing bigot you utter utter wánkér.

Well it is something that the GC lacks.

Eh? Amped was the best boarding game out there. Amped 2 is looking far superior too 1080 2.
Though SSX is cool but again

People are stupid. Japanese gamers particularly so.

I had a mate phone me on Friday night complaining about a sore hand. Turned out it was a joke about the weight of the Xbox. He loves Viewtiful Joe in an almost sexual way, but PGR swung it for him. And he knows feck all about games, he wants Enter The Matrix.

Yes I know. But it is growing, albeit slowly. And Nintendo are going to have it bite them as they get left behind.

What Racers AND shooters....

Errr sorry but 1080 will be a much better game... especially going on the dodgy release of the original amped. Though SSX is cool but again multiformat. Mario Party 5 maybe crap in mine and your book but it still rides high in the charts for a long time in Japan.

Yes I bloody do. PGR is a fantastic game... without question BUT it isn't as massive as GT or Mario Kart... Mario Kart is an institution... PGR isn't a reason... though like viewtiful it should be, to buy an X-box... X-box gamers will buy it but people won't buy an X-box for it. And a 2 year old game plus a one year old game will outsell Mario Kart? Those who wanted GTA would have got it by now on the sodding PS2... look GTA3 and VC has already sold consoles. I'll say again yes GTA3 and VC will sell well... but it won't sell the console.

It'll sell to Nintendo gamers but it won't sell consoles. It is why Capcom released it for the Cube, Cube gamers are more receptive to this sorta game.

Right... Nintendo don't go online mate and online gaming isn't that big.
I do not think Microsoft has anything to counter the big pull of Mario Kart and F Zero... the back up titles of 1080, Billy Hatcher, Mario Party 5 and so forth will also strengthen Nintendo's position. I believe Nintendo have done plenty to sell their system, they're even advertising for christs sake. Microsoft are relying on momentum to see them through... which is what Nintendo hoped to have after the release of Mario Sunshine last year.
And we all know that didn't work.
I used to love Nintendo, don't get me wrong, but I think the higher than Xbox sales are just a peak from the price drop, an Xbox price drop would have the same effect on its sales.
As things stand, if I was going to buy a console for Xmas, I would be more tempted to go for an Xbox. It has racers and shooters and the greatest RPG in memory.
I'm going to get F Zero, but Mario Party 5 is not something that people get really excited about. The same for 1080 Snowboarding 2, SSX 3 just out, not to mention Amped 2 with Live support.
Now Mario Kart is a big attraction, for most people, although I was never a fan. But do you seriously think it will be more of a pull than GTA double pack and PGR 2? I don't.
Now Viewtiful joe is great, it deserves to be a system seller, but people are stupid. People buy Fifa games every year instead of Pro Evo or whatever. So I have my doubts over how well that will do with casual gamers.
And the Xbox has one game that Nintendo have nothing to counter, Counterstrike. The most played online game of all time on Live.
