Back in the mid nineties the world was different from now. Oasis were the biggest band around, England did well at Euro 96 and maxed Ford Escorts were in. More importantly the Plasystation had just been born. It turned into a style icon for a generation.

The Playstation was a massive success. It was a contemporary of neds, baseball caps and puffer jackets.

But now everything has changed. Still there are people trying to hold on to those heady days. Sony themselves are the most desperate for these days to last forever. The reason is that Sony with their style have got the Playstation as symbol of then and it makes them so much money, the way things are.

Now the PS2 is around and it is just an update. But the PS2 has not yet made the impression that the PS did and now it seems that Playstation culture is dying, slowly. Many people I know are beginning to view Playstation culture as just too mid nineties.

Oasis are not now the biggest band, now they are living off of past laurels and successes. If their next album is not good then it could quite possibly be the end for them. I like Oasis so I am in no hurry to see them die.

Ford have axed the Escort. Now the Focus is here, and it is totally different. Boy racers are not cool. Nor are they nearly as common.

Puffer jackets are no longer as cool as they once were.

Baseball caps are still in though, one last bastion of the Playstation culture.

England are not the force they were 5 years ago, no matter what the score against Germany suggests.

But still the Playstation culture is with us. But now those 15 year old of 1995 are men of 21 with a real life to live and real bills to pay.

I think it is time for a big, radical change.

Now here in the noughties a new console war is set to be fought. Will the victor be a style icon like the Playstation? Will Oasis be number 1 again? Will boy racers in their caps and puffer jackets soon be driving maxed Focuses?

I do not think so. I think that the console of choice will be the GameCube, that the charts will be ruled by R'n'B groups like Destiny's Child and that denim, in a way not seen since the 70's, will be the clothing of choice for many. And in the face of fuel costs, Clios and Corsas will be the transport of choice.

What do you think of the Playstation generation and its culture? Do you think it is dying or do you think that it is about to enter a renaissance?

Heh, only just noticed this.

The thing is, we've had this all before and it's just so much bollards, it isn't worth replying to.

Exactly what I was trying to say, just much shorter and...better. Doesn't make much of a change, really. {:)

Claptrap. The technology is vastly different, as are the machines abilities. Much more of this hot air and we can all float off in a beautiful balloon!

You are correct about one thing though. The PlayStation generation is in decline.

The PS2 generatiion, however, is alive and well, and growing healthily.

I meant the PlayStation. Sony-Playstation. Playstation-Sony.

Also, you did write it was time for a big, radical change. That's why I was talking about changing. {:)

Ant who said anything about Sony changing? I was saying that the Playstation generation was slipping away. No it was not written because of Turbo. The Playstation generation is not just the console. I was talking about an era. Hence the mention of everything connected with the Playstation generation.

*Pizza break*

Myst I do not know about Nottingham but Puffa's were cool, at least here. Maybe you just do not really remember.

The point of the post was that the youth, the generation contemporary with the Playstation was fading from prominence. It is time that a new generation arose.

Say what you want but the PS2 has not made the same impact as the Original PS. And it is little more than an update. If technology stood still then the PS would be around forever. I never denied that there are going to be some goodf games on th PS2.

And on the subject of Nintendo, yes I do view them as sort of 80's. But the difference is that back then the games industry was considered part of the toy industry, not now. Also the PS was the first console to be considered as a fashion statement, and it was by non-gamers.

On the the GCs sales, some companies seem very hopeful, I say that because of comments from a friend who's job it is to sell them in bulk to the retailers. Incidentally another friend actually makes the games.

i'm afraid you are wrong there... the playstation will continue to live on for some years....while the gamecube will do well... people are unwilling to shell out £200 for a new console....i know this because i work with games and their consoles and the playstation is still on top, why?
becuase the console is cheap..and there are hundreds of games available at prices people can afford without having to save for six months.........

puffer jackets were cool?!...i must have missed that one

Ah, but the world was a different place when Nintendo first started, am I right?

Damn right. {:)

Well, everything's changed for Nintendo too. Have they changed ther style? No, not really. Are they still successful? Well, maybe not the N64, but the GBC and GBA were, and the GameCube has had a good reception so far.

>Now the PS2 is around and it is just an update.

errrrr, no. This has been disputed many times and I think anyone who says the PS2 is an 'update' just because it has the same name and the controllers look the same, is talking crap.

Too mid-ninties?? You what? Do people view Nintendo as mid-eighties? And although the PS2 hasn't been such a huge hit, it has culminated a very large userbase, and there are some absolute class games still to come, as well as games such as Red Faction, ZOE, GT3, StarFighter, Extreme G3 and many more that are already released.

Oasis are not now the biggest band, now they are living

Oasis? Who cares about Oasis, we're talking about the PS2 here.

Ford have axed the Escort. Now

Where do cars come into this? Yeah, you may be going on about things that are 'out of fashion,' but cars aren't consoles. The PS2 is very futuristic-looking, as quite a few of the games.

Puffer jackets are no longer
> as cool as they once were.

Puffer jackets aren't consoles either.

Baseball caps are still in though, one

What the hell is the connection between a baseball cap and the PlayStation?? :S

England are not the

Actually, I think England have now got the best squad they've had in years. And the score against Germany does prove that, me thinks.

But still the Playstation culture is with us.
> But now those 15 year old of 1995 are men of 21 with a real life to

Well, the people who played on the NES are years older than they were previously (no offence to anyone meant there, I'm sure none of you are old fogies) and I don't see talk of Nintendo going 'out of fashion.' Although, their childish cartoonie stlye has never been in fashion with many fans.

I think it is time for a big,
> radical change.

I don't think so. What change can they make? They have a new symbol for the PS2, they've bought a new console which looks a lot different from the PSX, I can't see what they can change, and to be honest, I don't know why then need tp change.

Now here in the noughties a new console war is
> set to be fought. Will the victor be a style icon like the

Hang on, has this been written thanks to Turbonutter's topic saying Nintendo Have No Style?? Is that what this is all about?

I do not
> think so. I think that the console of choice will be the GameCube.

Well, that makes a change, doesn't it?

that the charts will be ruled by R'n'B groups like Destiny's Child

Maybe they will.

Who cares?!

Biggles

I think I've answered that question, and basically, Sony don't need to 'change.' Nor do Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft anyway. Sony have bought out a new console and have a new symbol, I don't think they need to differ anymore from what they have currently.

Thanks for reading, Ant.

I reached double figures at last. Ok half were me but the other half were not. I realise now that I should have put it in the Prime, so watch for some hi tech wizardry.
