Can someone clear this up for me please - do you have to pay a monthly charge to play the game online? And, is it worth getting just to play offline? It looks really good, and the premise makes my mouth water, but having to pay a monthly fee on top of getting broadband, the cost of the game, and amount of my life it will consume, it suddenly seems not worth it.

Same goes for Planetside.

He has the helmet, but i think thats as far as it goes.

Not worth it in my opinion. Why would I want to pay £8 a month to play a game? because it has an online community? I'd rather just play a single player RPG, pretty much the same type of game except I'm not paying for the privilege of playing other people online. Seems a waste of money to me.
