I'd have to say GTA Vice City (without sounding like a fanboy), as it's thrown the GTA series from its birds-eye-view pixelated layout, to a beautifully rendered 3D world.
Other series's I think have improved since the originals include Age of Empires 2, it's just the best strategy game ever, if you disagree with me you are wrong.
However other series's seem to get worse as they go along. The Fifa series peaked with Fifa 99', a gem of a game, but the more recent Fifa titles lick balls - off the ball control? What!?
So, what sequels are good and which ones drink man mayonaise?

Don't know about the awards etc. but it's all about opinion at the end of the day. I also disliked Frontline and allied Assault because of how (I thought) they sucked balls. I preferred Allied Assault on PC when I had that. It was much more enjoyable IMO.
EA are notorious for releasing sequels which differ very little from their predecessors, yet charge you for a full new game.
I don't like EA anymore.

oh common, how can you call them below par, these games have been voted the best for gameplay and its graphics.

Agreed.
Also, GTA 3 took it away from the birdseye view, not Vice City.
Best Sequels:
Medieval Total War
Commandos 3
Tomb Raider 2
Max payne 2
Command and Conquer - Red Alert 2/ Generals
Zelda: Wind Waker
WWF Smackdown 2
All the Resident Evil games (peaked at 2, Zero and Code Veronica)
Worst Sequels:
Metal Gear Solid 2 (not awful but the latter stages were tedious)
Devil May Cry 2
Tomb Raider: Chronicles
Fifa 2002
Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear
SSX3 (and Tricky)
NOLF2
GTA3/Vice City
Max Payne 2
PGR2
Bad Sequels:
Most EA made games
Contract J.A.C.K
Tomb Raider Games
