Look at the price ! Posted similar topic in Sony forum to see their response.

New comments made by recently promoted Sony Europe president Chris Deering regarding the PlayStation Portable have hinted at a price point in the £250 range, while Japanese retail sources quote figures in a similar range.

Deering stated that the system would diverge from Sony's traditional console business model by being sold at a price which would make a profit on hardware alone, and suggested a price "closer to £200 than £300."

This comment ties in with information from Japanese retail sources early last week, who told us that a price point around 50,000 Yen was being bandied about in Tokyo - in fact, the most exact figure we were given was 48,000 Yen, almost exactly £250.

Quoted in UK trade paper MCV, Deering said that "the feeling is that this product should generate profit on hardware alone. We want to make it affordable for publishers to produce a wide range of entertainment and so royalties will be lower down in the mix this time round."

A move to reduce royalties on the system would be a major boost to third party support for the PSP, especially since for many publishers, the last experience they had of handheld gaming was Nintendo's GBA - where high royalty and manufacturing costs mean that very few companies other than Nintendo itself make a profit from the system, despite the fact that Nintendo also makes a profit on hardware sales.

Early last week, Deering stated that the company was aiming for a global launch for PSP in November of this year, although that figure was quickly revised to mid-December by SCE vice president Masutsuka Saeki, who gave the new estimate in an interview with Famitsu.

There is no way the PSP will have comparable graphics to the PS2. I expect a cut-down version, if indeed this rumour is true. It's been done many times before, look at the first GTAs on Game Boy.

The mystery machine will apparently be a third platform - that if it's good Sony no doubt will copy too eventually ;) - so it shouldn't take many sales away from the GBA2, which Nintendo should release in 2005, before the PSP.

There is one thing that I have been thinking about.
Since the graphics is almost equal to som ps2 games dont you think that many people will be attracted to that and not the ps2?
I have heard that it will get a version of the original getaway(wich did not like by the way) that will be comparable to the ps2 version.
What battery time will it have?
With so many features it will probably go short of power very quick.

Nintendo has so many quality games on the gba that it will still be popular when the psp is released.
I think that Nintendo will pull of the next gba in 2005 and we do also have the mystery machine that is released later this year.

But how well did it sell?

I know. But.

PS/N64.

Oh dear.

PSP/GB ----> Quite possibly.

I'm not saying it will, but one has to admit the ball is in Nintendos court and they need to pull the finger out and kick some Sony butt.

No idea.. how can you quote your own article and send it by accident.

But I agree Cyclone, the average punter would want the PSP over the GBA. The PlayStation brand is so well known, shorter battery life would be inconsequential, and all the extra features would attract, not detract from the average Joe's view of the two handhelds:
GBA: just plays games. Hmm.
PSP: games and other stuff too? = better!

But that's the thing everyone believes Nintendo are not in touch.. I believe strongly they are wrong... Nintendo ARE in touch... what they are trying to do is establish a new trend.

There are 2 reasons why I believe Nintendo know what the consumers want:

1: The GBA SP's advertisement campaign and design meant Nintendo had to double their sales expectations for the system... the GBA's fan base has now made a major dent into the adult field!

2: 1080 Avalanche is the most cool game Nintendo have ever made, knocking an opponent off his board, whilst slamming down a mountain at 130 MPH listening to Finger Eleven whilst being chased by an avalanche. This is what the consumers want and Nintendo know it.

The thing is Nintendo DO NOT ADVERTISE. And the reason for this is risk, risk killed SEGA, Atari and everyone that went before them... Nintendo don't take risks... they keep their hardcore fan base by releasing their traditonal titles. It doesn't make them succeed as much as they like but they have out lasted all their oldest rivals.

Hang on. I do trust them, over most things. One thing I don't trust them on (in fact the only thing) is their perception of a modern market. The average person will want the PSP over a GBA SP or its successor, unless Nintendo match Sony. Power and features are what idiots understand, not the genius of Advance Wars 2. Etc.
