If not, then chances are you won't like the Gamecube.
PS2 is a great console and and the truly great games are starting to be released so by the time the GC and Xbox are released, PS2 will have a huge number of amazing titles.
If you're not desperate to buy a console, then wait until both Xbox and Gamecube are out before making your choice.
Because 1. The PS2 will be cheaper than it is now and 2. you will have a better idea of which console you like.

NiGHTS!
That's true but I am looking to "upgrade" to the PS2 and therefore be able to play all the PS1 and PS2 games. The PS1 will be redundant at one point and also I simply don't have the space to have two consoles plugged in what with my DVD player, Tv, Stereo and other stuff. It's more convienent to have one console which is state of the art and have access to the next generation of games. Plus I am running out of space to stick cables into my TV:)
Look at the PC budget range £10 a game, and some of these games are great such as Populus the Beginning.
If the Xbox can only play Xbox games Ill give it a miss, but if it lives up to my expectations then it will be the must purchase!

Well most PS2 titles haven't managed that.
Besides, if they're having enough problems making copies of the game they made last year then imagine how many complications they're going to get by trying something new.
Basically it means devellopers spend more time on UNECCESSARY problems rather than working on the game.
This will make original games harder to make.
It will also mean that many games will either be heavily delayed or have a big drop in standard.
And like I said, if devellopers struggle to make a half decent game on the PS2 but easily make a better one on another machine, who do you think they'd rather work for?
The N64 and Saturn were also awkward to code for, and look what happened to their third party support...
