Ok, so what do you think I should do. I have been thinking about getting a PS2 but after looking at some previews for the Gamecube I am starting to think it will be the superior machine, and it is cheaper. Do you think the Gamecube will be a big hit or will it start out promising and fizzle out like the N64 did. Do you think there is any chance there will be a dramatic price cut in the PS2 once the Gamecube comes out. I am really stuck on this. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I would do one of those comparison things at a time like this, but it will take far too long. So I will do a brief one, for the sake of sanity. price? Gamecube is far cheaper. Media? it will run on discs, meaning develoers will have a more chance of supporting them. The only problem that I can see that may cause the GC not to be as big a hit as it should be is the possibility of lack of advertising; this happened with the DC - grwat games, nice format (GD -ROMS) and areasonable dev kit, only to be stamped out by almost no advertising at all. Otherwise, it's Nintendo (except for MGS2) all the way.

Youll also have to wait to see how the more expensive PS2 with a built in harddrive and modem are recieved before making a decision!

Did you like the type of games for the N64 - kiddies games?
If not, then chances are you won't like the Gamecube.
PS2 is a great console and and the truly great games are starting to be released so by the time the GC and Xbox are released, PS2 will have a huge number of amazing titles.
If you're not desperate to buy a console, then wait until both Xbox and Gamecube are out before making your choice.
Because 1. The PS2 will be cheaper than it is now and 2. you will have a better idea of which console you like.

Wait till one of your mates buys a GameCube then go round and give it a go. Then play on another friend's PS2. Then decide, simple.

NiGHTS!

That's true but I am looking to "upgrade" to the PS2 and therefore be able to play all the PS1 and PS2 games. The PS1 will be redundant at one point and also I simply don't have the space to have two consoles plugged in what with my DVD player, Tv, Stereo and other stuff. It's more convienent to have one console which is state of the art and have access to the next generation of games. Plus I am running out of space to stick cables into my TV:)

I will definately get a Xbox if the skilled programmers out their can get it to run PC games, and Im 100% convinced they will. PC games are dirt cheap, I saw an original PC version of Unreal tournament for only £3 today at a store (Admittedly it was unboxed) but it illustrates the point of the games being cheap.

Look at the PC budget range £10 a game, and some of these games are great such as Populus the Beginning.

If the Xbox can only play Xbox games Ill give it a miss, but if it lives up to my expectations then it will be the must purchase!

Well most PS2 titles haven't managed that.

Besides, if they're having enough problems making copies of the game they made last year then imagine how many complications they're going to get by trying something new.

Basically it means devellopers spend more time on UNECCESSARY problems rather than working on the game.
This will make original games harder to make.
It will also mean that many games will either be heavily delayed or have a big drop in standard.

And like I said, if devellopers struggle to make a half decent game on the PS2 but easily make a better one on another machine, who do you think they'd rather work for?

The N64 and Saturn were also awkward to code for, and look what happened to their third party support...
