As great as they were - no loading times and saving game without needing a memory card - they were expensive, couldn't hold much space (Perfect Dark and Zelda were only 32MB) and compared to the Playstation's modern CD's they added to the impression that the N64 was a childrens toy.
As to what FM said:
Those ratios for Nintendo are wrong unless you're talking about games of serious quality (Third party companies have given them plenty of cheap quality adult games).
If so then:
Nintendo 65:35
Sega 40:60
Sony 5:95
Microsoft 0:100 (I've yet to see a decent Microsoft game that wouldn't bore a child out of their wits!)
Although I prefer Nintendo's set up, I'd say that Sega have the best balance. Sony have rarely released a DECENT cartoony game (The original Crash and Spyro Dragon being some of the very few examples).
I think that the Gamecube will be even more balanced with companies like Capcom (the Zombie Fragging) and Konami making games for it.

Oh yes, and that.

Appearances can be deceptive, you know. Ans as for the lack of FMVs... well, that's purely because some games needed more cinema style scenes to display the stories, whereas most of the Ninty games actually based your interaction with the progression of the storyline. You see?
get the idea
You could say in terms of Kid/Mature games ratios that:
Nintendo is about 75/25
Sega is about 65/35
Sony is about 30/70
X-Box is about 20/80
It's all fine and well a game having a great learning curve and difficult ending levels, if you want to choose between fragging zombies or real racing sims on one platform or getting squirrels to jump over logs or collect stars on another, and you prefer fragging zombies, then Sony and X-Box are going to give you more choice in that direction.
(Yes, even the PS2 owners and Xbox wanters who still prefer their own systems.)
Basically, when adult games came onto the PC, PS and Saturn, people liked them as a refreshing change from the old Snes/Mega Drive 2D platforming.
When the N64 came out with cartoony cute graphics it sparked off a hail of stereotyping.
Proper gamers know that how mature a game is depends on it's gameplay.
All Nintendo games from Mario through to Perfect Dark (the more traditional adult game) follow the same easy to get into but nearly impossible to finish difficulty rating which means that even the youngest gamers can play and enjoy while older, more experienced gamers can enjoy a serious challenge to the end.
Anyone who argues otherwise are either trying to wind me up (i.e. Joking) or just plainly dim.
(And now a billion replies will fall into the first catagory now I've said that...)
