The graphics/animation is the best i have seen anywhere, let alone in a film. The level of detail on the characters faces is breath taking and looks very much like a real persons face. Even on the close up shot with the main character, you can see the skin imperfections and it looks very, very real. The characters move like people do, either be it walking along a corridor or scrabbling up a recently destroyed building wall to reach the top. The audio and music is very good as well. The sounds are very realistic from the voices of the characters to the sounds of feet walking alone a pebbled/rubbled terrain. The music is powerful and used in certain parts of the film to add to the effect of the current situation.
Forgetting the fact that the visuals are very impressive the plot is worth a mention. This film isn't just hoping to get somewhere due to the very good animation the plot is something you would expect from Square. Some of the ideas in the film are very original, interesting and weird! I don't want to give to much away if you haven't see it already (and you SHOULD have!!!) but it a decent plot which doesn't look like it has any trouble moving alone as you watch the film. You are never at one point bombarded with so much information that you are overwhelmed and haven’t got a clue what is going but neither are you picking your nails or looking round the cinema for something interesting. The start of the film is slightly odd but it does explain itself. The film also has so much emotion. You'll either be cheering on the squad of marines or the individual characters as they try and make a difference. You'll hate the main "bad-guy" and you'll feel a little bit sadder when somebody dies. Add to this the music, the sounds and the facial expression of the characters and you've got a well put together film which deserves praise.
The bottom line is this film is excellent and by far the best film i have seen this year. Even if you are not into the Final Fantasy series (i've only played FF8) the film has nothing to do with any of the games. If you make one trip to the cinema, it should be to watch Final Fantasy: The Sprits Within.
Darkreaper
Not really important, but it was bugging me trying to remember what film it was.
They've sunk the Titanic, blown up the earth and had humans morphing into liquid for years now. Do you really think it would have been a struggle to combine live action with CGI and slash the costs?
No, it wouldn't. However then they wouldn't be able to blow everything out of proportion and come up with the press friendly storys of signing Aiki and how real actors are "past it".
Yawn! Unbelievably dull story, laughably bad "acting", if it didn't have Final Fantasy slapped on the tin and have an insane amount of money pumped into it no one would even blink an eye lid at its passing. Would have been relegated into the straight to video class along with all the other Manga rubbish (in the vastly overwhelming majority) the East pumps out daily.
The whole point of animation is to create a fantasy world - not try and make reality out of pixles. Why spend literally millions animating a head of hair? Why not just use a real head of hair on a real actress? For goodness sake animation and humans have been merged together since the sixties. And the face animation was ludicrously bad - there was NO emotion. NONE.
Oh, but that's right, it had Final Fantasy in the tag line and the media are kicking up a fuss about it, must have been great.
Jeff Bridges is a guy sucked into his computer, ends up as a character in one of those "Speedball/Unreal Tournament" type deals.
Theory of the movie is:
The characters in the games are real, and you are "The User" when you play, you control their lives and they only survive if you're good enough.
Top movie.
You heathen scum!
Were there any light-cycles in it?
Frisbees?
Exactly.
I expected to go and gorge myself on a purely visual feast, but actually found myself getting into it!
Its kind of a hybrid of FF7, FF8, Aliens and Starship Troopers in style. Then its given a VERY final fantasy plot, it lacks a little in depth but then they have to fit a story style that takes 40+ hours to unravel and fit it into 2.
It has some nice Final fantasy conventions in it, most noticably the films climax taking place in a big ol' crater. The "spiritual" nonsense (which I appreciated) made up the fantasy element, the rest of the film was quite sci-fi heavy, but good.
The baddie was a bit like a black haired and clothed Seifer from FF8 and a bit underused, but good all the same.
I think if this plot had had a good 40 hours to unravel it could have had some of the depth that FF is known for.
Verdict: Not for everyone, but I thought it were grand :-)
