RPG.
Got it? Right snap up Lost Kingdoms, get tonnes of Final Fantasy, grab the tales series by the horns and release any other RPG you fancy... how about developing a Pokemon one you fool! Look the Japanese market really isn't that hard to fathom... action adventure games succeed irregulary... RPG's rule. Simple. RPG's and Pokemon... not that much of a challenge?
What about the west? Another simple little job for ya, march right up to Eidos... and go "Oi Eidos NO, we don't want your crappy Tomb Raider series or your now defunked Championship Manager games. But gives us Hitman 3. The only reason Hitman 2 failed was because you are a bunch of bloody idiots and released the game 8 months after the other systems. Yeah that's it blame it on our lack of success and not your own dumb ass marketing ploys, sort yourself out man we'll help the costs just port it to the Cube... ON TIME".
A few handshakes later and march over to EA and go "Oi EA NO! You've done us a lot of favours and we appreciate it but give your 2nd party studio Criteon a slap for us. Burnout 3 is needed you understand b!tch... it's a top game... I want it... the fans want it and dammit we need a decent driving game... get it sorted!"
A few handshakes later then woddle over to Rockstar and go "Oi Rockstarr NO! You've enjoyed so much success with the GTA series isn't it about time you developed a version for the cube? How about geering it to our hardcore fan base... a few Nintendo related goodies like an arcade or even a pathetic Mario statue will do... a few gubbins onto a pre-existing engine won't take too much and we'll cover the damn costs. Get it on the Cube!"
Finished? Right now visit Atari, Acclaim, Codemasters and get some stuff sorted there. Go over to Free Radical and thank the guys for releasing Timesplitters 3 and Second Sight for the Gamecube, shake hands with Ubi-soft for their dedicated support and give a wink to Activision. Western ties are feeling good you see, watch the sales increase a bit... watch the supply of games look better.
In the East Nintendo you are doing some very clever stuff, you're doing deals with mega Eastern developers, NAMCO and Capcom are trying to impress you the most, Konami are doing deals with you, SEGA release a set of exclusive titles... dammit even Hudson, Koi etc... are loving you up. It may not be going too well over there, but a few high profile RPG's, the DS and perhaps a nice new prephiral will do the trick.
This will not work as well in the West, maybe it'll do a bit but not as much as getting the western developers on board. There is more than just EA over here, you've openly mentioned how important GTA could be... can you not do a few deals over here? I mean an exclusive game from EA will cause some serious sales damage, Free Radical are excellent and encouraging them to develop an exclusive FPS might help... Activision, THQ all like ya and so do fantastic company Ubi-soft. This is a company willing to fiddle with Online gaming for you and even release titles such as Rayman 3 early. Play with this friendship... strengthen old ties... Your deals with Square, Capcom, Namco, SEGA and Konami in the east are great... work with those but lets come over here now Nintendo talk to our developers.
Your home market may not be impressed with their offerings but if you want to succeed abroad you'll need to chat up the developers. It's about time you did a Sony and got some good contacts.
You sold Rare, a company that single handidly kept you afloat in Europe and America... Retro and Silicon knights are fantastic western developers... both are developing Eastern games.
When will you learn?

Anyway, early days.
What Nintendo should do is stay out of the next generation battle of the titans and let MS and Sony wear each other down.
Meanwhile, the Gamecube will get cheaper and cheaper and get a larger and larger selection of games.
No reason why it can't keep going as not a single game has touched it's potential yet. I wanted the Gamecube as soon as the N64 couldn't handle Perfect Dark's frame-rate anymore.
The Gamecube notched up the stunning Dinosaur Planet, slowdown-free.
If the Gamecube can produce graphics of that calibre, then the need for more power is a LONG way off.
Owning the budget market will mean that there will be no excuse left to ignore it. Once it's going for Ł50 with Smash Brothers, Monkey Ball, Mario Kart or Soccer Slam it'll be the perfect little centre for party games and everyone will be tempted by it, even if it IS only a secondary console to their big PS3/Xbox2.
Then Nintendo can finally make full use of the Gamecube's power and suddenly bombard it with the most extensive, imaginative game designs yet (possibly a few new franchises) and everyone who owns it will be keeping an eye out for magazine reviews which would recommend all Nintendo's big franchises to the newly enlargened user base.
This would be the best form of advertising the Nintendo brand and Nintendo would make a huge profit rather than spending a penny.
By this time, the Gamecube would be starting to show it's age a little, and THEN Nintendo should make a new console.
The leap from Gamecube to the new one would be huge, they could steal the best features from the Xbox2 and PS3 while leaving out the white elephants.
They'd also be able to release it when the Xbox2 and PS3 have lost their sheen but the next ones are a long way off.
By then, Nintendo would have worked out the Gamecube's limitations and how they could take their franchises further on a new system (perhaps online play, for example).
Their large userbase, having been hooked on the cheap Gamecube games would be instantly interested in the newer games. And that would just be the Nintendo ones. A good mix of third party support would make the new Nintendo machine a must for all gamers around.
Who knows, they might become the big name of gaming they were back in the days of the Nes, Snes and "Brick" Gameboy.
THAT would be a masterplan, eh Dringo? :-)
Sony are Japanese, and so is their Playstation brand, yet they have an English developer (Team Soho) develop The Getaway primarily for the British market, AND they gave the developers loads of cash to make this title.
The game ended up as an abhorrent pile of toss, but it did HUGE business in the UK and made Sony a fortune.
We wouldn’t want Nintendo to go out and fund an overly violent swear-fest like Sony’s effort, but The Getaway undoubtedly appealed to British punters. And that is the main thing that Nintendo doesn’t really do: appeal to every market in the world. They do what they do very well, but they don't provide a broad enough range of products for all ages and genres.
If they want to do well in a place like Britain (a place which can be very profitable), they’ll need to buy up some British talent and make games us Brits want to play, because not every average Joe wants to play Animal Crossing or games with a strong Japanese influence. 1080 and Metroid did it well, but we need more.
I also think the main problem Nintendo face in this country is what the average gamer wants. Yes, there are plenty of Nintendo fans out there, but as you can see by the sales charts every week, the punters want FIFA, movie tie-ins and brand names, hence the fact that Prince of Persia didn't do so great on the PS2 at Christmas time.
By the way, telling all the games publishers they think their products suck would not do Nintendo any favours. That's definitely part of the problem though, too much self importance.
"Nintendo seal of quality". Nobody cares about that anymore.

Good job too, cos they can't.
> The GC is limited by it's disc capacity as well.

I may have been over-stretching the point I didn't mean to insult the companies.
Of course GTA could work on the Gamecube... maybe not a port of Vice City but a bit of compression or a second disc... it doesn't have to be as big.
Nintendo are apparently reading forums in an attempt to work out what the consumer wants so this might help.
I agree actually I think Nintendo should pull out of the hardware race for the next generation or at least the generation after. Concentrate on the Gameboy and creating a console for the following generation... also release software on the PS2 and X-box... FOR BOTH OF THEM. Attract the X-box and PS2 gamers with Nintendo games then pull away with your own system.
They also shrink loading times...
And make more money through their own format rather than having to give Sony some money.
By the by, EA have cancelled UEFA 2004 now, how many is that cancelled this week so far? Depressing.
But Nintendo are stupid and stubborn and wish to keep the proper franchise GB only.
