Nintendo's western allies grow thinner.

As I have said countless times Nintendo have an army to be proud of in the East... but major developers are leaving Nintendo in their droves.

Midway are not the worlds worst developer, but they are no means the best either, Acclaim after losing Burnout have nothing new to offer the gamecube... Codemasters have some class software that could improve Nintendo's userbase but nothing essential... and Eidios have lost nearly all their best franchises bar Hitman.

But that doesn't mean a thing in the world of business. Granted from our pessemistic point of view Nintendo can lose THQ as well because they are also 'crap'... as long as EA, Ubisoft and ACtivision are on board all is okay... and all 3 are without a hint of slowdown.

But Mortal Kombat, Hitman, Extreme G and various others do sell systems... or at least are reasons why people SHOULDN'T get a Gamecube.

Because we no longer have them.

As I've said before Nintendo, if you are listening, and you said you are.... please offer some incentives for these developers to jump back on board... get some exclusives... some EA style deals just to ensure more multi-format games.

If you expanded Silicon Knights and Retro Studios from their one game a year between them status to massive developers then the situation would be less dire. But you haven't, in fact you've given them Metroid and Metal Gear Solid to developer... big games indeed but NOT Western games... these are games invented in Japan... you NEED to start grabbing some western games or inventing your own.

The choice is yours... a bit of dealing with major publishers such as Ubi-soft, Eidios, Atari and Acclaim or a multi-million investement into your 2 current teams making them large enough to support the west single handidly (Rare did it after all)...

Because if you don't do something... then I'm afraid no dual screen handheld or multi-million selling Resident Evil game can save you.

Rare Ware are a massive development house, it is why they are worth so much, with many real Killer franchises. Rare are a western money maker, much like Rockstarr and they were Nintendo's. Midway, Eidios, Codemasters never really supported the 64... in fact neither did eastern developers Capcom or Namco (the latter two of course is very different today)... but it didn't matter. Nintendo had themselves and a whole host of 2nd party developers in the east and they still do... they had Rare in the west and due to their size they could almost singlehandidly support the system.

And with Banjo, Pefect Dark, Goldeneye and Conker they did.

But now Rare have gone, in their place are two much smaller houses... the once massive but since shrunk Retro Studio's and the growing in size Silicon Knights. Nintendo are supplying both companies with money allowing them to expand BUT not enough fast enough...

Nintendo either need to expand Retro, increase third party support or perhaps snap up another company (dreaming of Free Radical).

Dringo's point was that whether or not these games are good or not, they are needed to offer variety.

Imagine you are a typical 13 year old. You aren't savvy enough to read decent games magazines or look up internet reviews. Your mate has Extreme G on his PS2. He tells you it's really great. You want it too. But come your birthday you get a PS2 instead of a Gamecube because it doesn't have it. It is all about variety. And for more impressionable consumers, style over substance.

Yes in general Nintendo outshine all competition on their consoles, but they need variety. Are Nintendo going to make a Hitman clone? No. Zelda and Mario alone are not good enough reasons to own a Gamecube for most people. With the N64 there was Goldeneye and Perfect Dark as well, not to mention Banjo Kazooie etc for consumers in the west. And like Dringo said, it was Rare that kept Nintendo going in the west.

The typical consumer wants cool looking crap. They do, because they are stupid. But Nintendo want their money. And to get it, they need to give them some cool looking crap. When Rare were still around the managed to make cool looking great games. Which people loved, and bought. But cool looking crap will suffice for most people.

Unless Nintendo provide that, fewer and fewer people outside of hard core gamers and Zelda and Mario lovers will actually want a Gamecube.

This is the continuing problem.

I personally don't miss these games, except Hitman 3. But the Cube does, and it needs sorting out, because each game is potentially more sales.

Yeah, these companies eh?

"Na na na. No one buys our games on GameCube. Na na na. We get good sales on PS2 and Xbox. Na na na. It must be because GameCube owners are children."

It's because this is Nintendo's console, you fools. You can't get away with crappy efforts here. WE HAVE STANDARDS.

Stop being so ignorant, put a bit of effort in, and you games will sell accordingly.
