Being a die-hard Nintendo fan is not easy you know. Every morning I get up, bow to my Gamecube, kiss all my joy pads and religiously study the manuals of all my Nintendo games (SNES. NES, N64, Gamecube and Gameboy). Every piece of negative news I spin into a positive light, I do it so well, Nintendo should hire me as their PR wizard.

But I’ve had enough. Nintendo you are one ******* stupid bloody piece of ****. That’s right it is I, the legendary Dringo, he who can not be slain by Playstation and starves off the threat of the X-box who is saying this you proud ******. What the hell are you playing at? I’m a WESTERN NINTENDO FAN, I don’t get all those ******* titles from Japan with the words Giftipia or Animal Forest printed on the side. And the ones I do get, Doshin the ******* Giant, turns out to be a pile of utter toss.

Every time I spin some negative news article into a positive light but why? Who’s the idiot now ah? You cut second party ties with a certain Left Field, Left Field (NBA courtside and Excitebike 64) are your sports developer; they make your sports games. But oh look you don’t REALLY need them now SEGA has gone multi-format with their sports range. So remove them, who cares. Oh well look at that, less than a year later and SEGA cancel all their sports titles for the Gamecube. WOOPS! Now whom can you turn to? That’s right NO ONE, I have noticed you are now making your own mature sports games (the upcoming Legend of Golfer) but it’s too late.

Ah yes Nintendo, now onto Rare Ware. My previous status was that “they’re crap anyway” and that “they lost Nintendo money”. ********, you ARE dumb aren’t you Nintendo? Want to know why they didn’t make you much money in the year before you sold them? Because they didn’t ACTUALLY release any bloody games! Rare Ware are an unresponsive developer but they were your other half, they are more than Silicon Knights, Left Field, HAL etc... put together. They made Banjo, Conker, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong and Perfect Dark… all of these are BIG Nintendo releases, well they would have been if you hadn’t ******* sold them! Look at this, your sales aren’t up to scratch! Could this be down to a certain absence of a company that made half your AAA titles? It nearly forced me away, but then that was okay, at least you have Retro Studios and Silicon Knights.

Oh Sympathy where have you gone.

First off you crush Retro Studio’s. A bit of a re-shuffle was needed, EAD’s help was appreciated on Metroid Prime. BUT did you really need to destroy the 4 teams that were there into 1? Raven Blade, that racer and that football game WAS exactly what Nintendo Gamecube lacks. A decent footy game, a decent exclusive racing title and a mature action RPG. But you cancelled them. Did you really have to scrap all those games?

And now modern day. The one that made me snap. I love Silicon Knights. True they are hardly a true example of Nintendo (prefer cinematic gameplay and adult games) but that was the point. Nintendo you’ve told me time and time again how you want to be more “adult” and Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes are YOUR most mature games. And you cut ties with the company behind them? Too Human can now return to the PS2, which it was originally coded for, and you’ve lost yet another special western developer.

I know Nintendo. You have loads of second parties, some I never even knew about including that new sports developer SETA (ever heard of them? No neither have I). But Rare, Silicon Knights, the full Retro team and Left Field could have all pushed Nintendo in both Europe and America. You would have defeated Microsoft and competed more fiercely. But instead you try to get exclusives from other companies that simply do not sell. Capcom are having to cancel their plans to keep Viewtiful Joe and Killer 7 exclusive and cannot wait for the Resident Evil deal to expire. Namco are doing okay but that’s because they hardly support Nintendo as much as they support Sony. SEGA have been drifting away ever so slowly, remember the Virtual Fighter RPG and the sonic series were once exclusive to Nintendo. They are both now lost.

So tell me Nintendo, who do you have left to sell your product to the western world? You don’t have Rare, you don’t have Silicon Knights, you don’t have Left field. Christ you don’t even have Capcom anymore. And in fact you’ve even lost Dringo, your most avid supporter. Sure I love Zelda and Mario, but I’m a western gamer, I have western needs and the only western game you actually make is Metroid Prime, and I don’t even like it.

Maybe one day you’ll acquire some killer, high profile companies such as Capcom, Midway or Free Radical Design. But in the mean time I need to raise funds for an X-box. After all a western Nintendo fan needs his Rare.

Dringo.

First of all, I'm a Sega fanatic. Hence, seeing as they don't make hardware anymore, I have no allegiances.

I know this is the Nintendo forum, so sanity has gone out the window. I can live with that.

Xbox versus Cube multiplayer.

Hmmm... I like my FPS and racers. On Xbox, I have the option of Halo, PGR, Time Spltters 2, PGR2, Counter Strike, Rainbow Six 3, Ghost Recon, XIII, TOCA, NFS:U, blah blah. Lots of choice for my favourite type of games. Now, some of these are multi format. Generally, if they are good on one platform, they are good on another, like Time Splitters 2.

Let's stick with Time Splitters 2 for a moment. Great game. Now on the Cube, I can play 4 way split screen. But I can do that on Xbox as well. And I can do link up, and play with 16 people. Plus the hard drive is handy for the map maker. So if anything, bonus points to the Xbox.

I like system link. I like it because I have more than three friends. Maybe no other Ninty fans do, but I do. I also find it more fun to have real mates around and play with them, but Live has its place. Like finding people to play with at 3 AM and getting a decent match.

But real people in the same room is better. But having your own full size screen is better yet. Hedfix has two Xboxes. So that means that he can have 7 other friends play Halo with him in his house at any one time. 7 is greater than 3, logical. Of course, he also has Live. And sometimes he has a mate around and they play Live together, giving them another 14 people to kill, if they so desire.

Y'see, in general, the Xbox doesn't lose out in any way on multiplayer, rather the Cube does by lacking online and system link modes in a lot of big games.

So the argument becomes, does the Cube have better multiplayer games than the Xbox? Well, what type do you like? I've seen people say that Super Monkey Ball 2 is better than Halo. Hopefully they have seen a psychiatrist. But anyway, not everyone love Super Monkey Ball 2. And as for racers, Project Gotham Racing 2 is infinitely better than Mario Kart Double Dash from my point of view. Now an online, 8 player Mario Kart would be great fun, but I still like real cars more than karts.

As for things like Mario Tennis, well sure, being exclusive to Nintendo, of course the Xbox won't have them. But again, who prefers tennis to FPS and racers? And even if they do, Top Spin is an utterly amazing game. Golf... Links 2004 is raved about muchly by certain people, if not me amongst them.

The Gamecube multiplayer games are a certain type of game. They aren't your normal kind of games. Sure, I love Smash Bros, and Metroid Prime 2 could be the next Halo as far as I'm concerned. F Zero GX is a fantastic game. But overall, it fails to satisfy me. And when you get multi format games like Time Splitters 2, there is no benefit in having the Gamecube version over the Xbox version. Same with XIII.

I don't want games with pink blobs in them. If I did, I'd make a game about myself on the beach. In my games I want frickin' big guns and rocket launchers and cars that will make porn stars knickers hit the ground at speed. And I like proving to friends that my gun is bigger and my car faster than theirs. I also like as many possible ways of doing it.

Xbox wins the multiplayer war. Gamecube is probably better for single player.

Everything Tilt said about the Gamecube multiplayer - the best ones are so abstract that only other Gamecube owners can play them.
Getting a decent game on them is hard unless you settle for Fifa.

As to Sony's PSP being aimed at adults, it's a well known fact that the kids like "adult" games a lot more than adults do.

I know it's a bit presumptious to say that the GBA's success might have alot to do with the lack of competition, but if you told a kid to choose between his Playstation 2 and Gameboy Advance, what do you think he'll choose?

I think the Playstation brand is more powerful than the Gameboy one.
People will settle for the Gameboy but will they choose it over a portable playstation?

The Advance had it easy.
With the DS, Nintendo have a serious fight on their hands, but they can win.
Wireless Goldeneye. Wireless Perfect Dark. Wireless Mario Kart.

The one of the best things about Goldeneye was its universal appeal.
It was violent enough to be "adult" but not too violent so as to be unsuitable and kids could enjoy it without their parents raising a fuss.
Beginners could get stuck straight in with the auto aim and intuitive controls while experts could master instant headshots using the crosshair.

Also, people still remember Goldeneye.

Nintendo need it.

Only one type of adult buy's handheld games. They are the hardcore. Those who are happy to sit at home, with GBA players or whatever and play them without seeming a geek but still playing older games.

Hardcore will buy the PSP... but the DS is also after their money as well.

And the DS also sell to the younger generation.

I think Sny are following their current marketing strategy - Make games for the 'adult' market, so the teens will lick it up.

Whether or not it'll work on a handheld is yet to be seen.

Gah! How many adults play handheld games!

How will Sony beat the cheap GBA SP with a £200 machine? By the time it is released IPOD will be dirt cheap and video on the go has never taken off an never will.

Also battery power will be a major issue to Sony.

Not to mention how it misses out any head start as Nintendo are launching the DS before it.

The Playstation took on the Nintendo franchise when it was just a small brand. The Gameboy brand is massive... bigger than the Playstation STILL. Sony are selling a system to an uninterested adult market, at a high price, with a load of extras... in a market ruled by one company alone.

Tell me how this isn't the N-GAGE all over again?

It's a stupid thing to release especially as Sony are selling it to adults. No offence but adults don't play handheld gaming, only the hardcore and children do... and Nintendo are fortunate enough to be able to sell their DS system to these catagories.

Yes Sony can sell to adults... but so can Nokia... and Nokia learnt the hard way that adults don't see it as being cool to sit in a pub and play on their MP3, Video game machine hybrid. They prefer to sit at home with a beer before bed time and give it a go.

Handheld gaming doesn't appeal... it isn't even cool to play on a phone anymore!

Oh and please god take the statement you made back about multiplayer getting Metroid Prime the kind of recognition that Goldeneye received.

That will never happen.

Yeah, but it'll be very much the same game with a couple more enemies and a few new locations. There won't be any changes to the game play, it'll still be a case of running into large arenas and having hundereds of enemies charge at you.

Pacman Vs doesn't intrest me in the slightest. Melee was much better than the 64 version but it's the type of game that is practically impossible to find people who actually want to play it. same goes for Mario Party, as great as the games are I only once in every blue moon find 4 people willing to sit around a console and play a Mario style board game type thing.

It's not that the multiplayer games aren't good, it's just none of them have grabbed me the same way Goldeneye, ISS 98 or WWF No Mercy did.

> Ah the N-Gage. Living proof the PSP will fall.

Very very unlikely.

The N-Gage was todays equivalent to the Game Gear. No-one wants it, no-one bought it and most of the games we're rubbish.

But on the other hand, the PSP will place it's portable little ass on the portable gaming platforms throne. You know why? Because as Alistair mentioned, the popularity of the Plastation is vast. It's the "cool" thing to have, it's mainstream.

I'm expecting to see masses of these things selling, if Sony does it right. The GBA will then have it's true competitor.
