"Oh my God, he's pointing that gun at us, quick: Fire!"

Six bullets later a man lays dead.

"Aw damn, it was just a lighter."

Later that day protesters gather.

"We cannot accept this kind of policing!"

The question is, from looking at it, how could a police officer have known that it was a replica gun, merely a lighter?

I wasn't there, I don't know exactly what happened, but I doubt the police simply shot this guy for having a replica gun in his pocket.

Maybe he thought "Dur, I know, I'll point my lighter that looks like a gun at them, and they'll be scared. They'll feel so stupid when it's only a lighter!" Obviously this wasn't a good idea!

Maybe a police officer got an itchy trigger finger, and shot before giving sufficient warning.

I don't know exactly what happened, but it's quite apparent that it would NOT have happened if such things as replica guns could not be bought.

What exactly is the point in a replica gun? "Hey looky what I got! It looks like a gun! Man am I cool. I'm so bad, ha ha!"

Countells people have been held up with replica guns, the thought of being shot isn't a nice one, and the majority of people wouldn't know the difference between a replica an real one. I can't see the point in such an item existing - surely it's only purpose ids as a threat?

Back to the original point. The polie see a man, and they think he has a gun. What if it was real? What if they hesitated when he pointed it at them, and he killed one of them?

Surely then there would be outrage. this dead officer would be called a 'hero' in The Sun, and the police would be criticised for their hesitation that cost them the life of a fine officer.

Again, I don't know what happened, but if this guy pointed a replica gun at a police officer, then he deserved to be shot.

You can't shoot someone in the arm or leg. For a start it's smaller than the body so you're more likely to miss. Also, whats to stop him shooting a couple of people as he goes down, either on purpose or by chance?

If you've got to shoot someone, shoot to kill, it's the only way to completely guaruntee to take out the the threat.

Unless you're in a computer game where you can shoot the gun out of his hand, which is so impossible to do in real life.

I second that...

Also so the man was stupid but I don't know the facts myself... maybe he pointing it at his mate as a joke... as children do. Did they give this man any warning to drop it? Why did they fire 6 bullets at him... why not shoot him the arm or leg.

Someome made a mistake... you can't just fire a gun that will kill someone for no reason... There are smalll kids running around my street with plastic guns... would they kill them for mistaking it for a real gun?

OK so am man was stupid and pointed a replica gun at the police or a bystander. The police react to protect and server and take him down. Now it becomes a reason for takleing the guns from the police or maybe it was racist. What can sell the most papers?

I think it would be a very bad idea to take guns away from the police. Imagine that someone goes into a small and takes some children hostage with a handgun. What are the police supposed to do. Just sit back and wait for him to come out. People could commit crimes and when teh police try to arest them could pull a gun.

I think having small devisions of armed and well trained police is a good idea and that the media should stop provokeing arguments.

Yes if he was using the Gun as a threatening weapon. He was threatening death to the Hostage in a stand off with the police. As he is threatening thhe lie of another he deserved to die in preference to the hostage as he has commit the crime.

That guy should have been shot and the guy with the swords they were threatening the public and this threat had to be stopped the police had to neutralise this threat to stop potential loss of innocent life. The guy with the lighter was pretending it was a gun in a hostage situation he had to be "Taken out"

I've only heard sparse reports on the news and what I've just read on here.

But it would seem that if he was waving around something that looked like a gun, he deserves to be shot. I heard that it wasn't a replica gun, but it was in fact a lighter.

Either way, wave something around that looks like a gun nd you deserve what you get, irrespective of his colour. He could have been green with purple and yellow bits and have 6 arms for all I care.
