So we all know the next names for the Playstation consoles, Playstation 3, 4, 5, and 6 (.com's of them have all been taken by Sony, after someone got ps2.com... lucky)

So what do these numbers mean? Is it Sony beginning original? Couldn't be bothered to make a name up? Or does it have a real meaning?

The Playstation 2 has, the same controller as the Playstation, the same logo, (the PS thing), many games from the Playstation (sequels). So does the name have a meaning?... YES!

The Playstation 2 is a sequel console. It is a upgrade of the Playstation; it has games like Tekken, Grand Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and more. So has the upgrade worked? Yes, it has worked, but if it wasn't backwards compatible it wouldn't be able to (in the words of er-no) ride the success of the Playstation so they can get though these bad times. A good example of this Syphon Filter 3 is coming out on the Playstation 1 not 2, and why is this? I leave it to you. I have a friend who has a Playstation 2, the game he plays the most is Smackdown 2.

Have you ever closed your eyes whilst playing the Playstation 2? The games feel like there the same, no real new experience there, shame really cause the games could be a lot better. I mean, Time Splitters is a good game and all, but it just doesn't feel new. When I first saw Goldeneye, I couldn't believe my eyes. 3-D graphics like I have never seen before. James Bond walking that famous walk, Facility was truly life like. This was a new experience I have never felt like that ever, until Zelda (I won’t go on)

Te name has been done before. Sega did it. Instead of doing a Nintendo and bringing an expansion pak out, they brought a upgraded console out. The Megadrive 2. Any similarities in the name?

I am not dissing the PS2, the games I have played, and the games coming out which I have seen on the game network (and read about in ukgames.com) look promising, but at the moment. It’s just a upgrade. I wanted a new console, like the Gamecube or X-Box. So Sony needs to make the Playstation 3 much more than just a upgrade. Because the Playstation 2 isn't a big enough jump (at the moment) to call it a next generation console.

I don't feel that the PS2 needed a new controller.

The old one is perfectly suited to the types of games available.

The N64 pad, however was designed more for 3D adventures such as Mario, a new design was needed to make it more suitable for all types of games.

Though it was a very good controller for FPS games too.

I AM NOT ATTACKING THE PS2'S CONTROLLER

It is great i love it but come on i would like a new one, makes developers make a new style of gaming, brigns gaming to the next generation.

Please be aware Simon likes the PS2 but he didn't find it that special unlke the way he found the Playstation special.

The Gamecube will be new, feel new and play new. The PS2 is indeed new but as Freak of the Dark points out not new enough!

If you knew anything at all about English, you'd know I was comparing the PlayStation to the PSone and the MegaDrive 1 to the MegaDrive 2. They are both similar as the PSone has no more power than the PS in the same way that the MD2 has no more power than the MD1.

Idiotic berk.

Why not call it the Playstation 2? The name 'Playstation' is something that gamers know. Sony are associated with all sorts of other consumer electricals, so if they went for a new name, 'the UbberBox' for instance, how would the consumer know what it was from name alone? they might think it's a TV. They've already done the hard work, getting the name 'Playstation' so well known, why throw all of that hard work away?

Nintendo and Sega can get away with all of these different names attached to their consoles, as Nintendo and Sega ONLY make consoles. There will be no confusion with any other consumer electicals.

I think that the PS2 is quite a major step up from the Playstation. It's a wonder that it survived for so long, and still has so much life left in it! The Playstation 2 is capable of a significant amount more, and I imagine it will achieve it.

If I could I'd dignify it with a baseball bat.

Thinking about it, I'm surprised any of us dignified "The PS2 is just the same as the PS1" with a response.

The physics models in GT3, the AI in Cnflict Zone and the freedom of movement in Sky Odyssey could never have been achieved on the PSone. All the games feel differant, but ask yourself this: Does Sonic on the GameGear feel any differant to Sonic on the MegaDrive? No, it feels exactly the same. Therefore, is the MegaDrive an upgrade of the GameGear? I think not.

The best thing about the PS controllers is that for me, when i play it i dont have to look at it to know where the buttons are. i guess its the same with any pad that you are used to, but the most important thing about a pad is that you shouldnt realise its there, like a direct link from you to the console.

The PS2 is a sequel? The Megadrive 2 is a sequel as it was the same machine in a different box. Though there are many similarities with the ps2 and the ps1 there are many differences. as tarrant said, ZOE could never have been done on the ps1, as with many games. If ps2 wasnt here, ridge racer 5 would have just been made for the ps1. there are games (herdy gerdy) that the developers have said that they wanted to do it on the ps1, but had to wait for the technology to develop, and the ps2 was ideal.

And the Gamecube? Youre saying that every title on there is completely original, and the characters are all new? Hmmm. Its an upgrade of the N64, which is a SNES, which is a NES.

But then, big deal! So what if your all-powerful new machine plays the same games as the last one? Theyll be the same great games, with better handling, engines, graphics, sound, its like you have your old classic at the latest technology.

I personally dont have a problem with it.

A new controller should not be on the list of priorities when it comes to "what makes a new console".

New experiences?
Z.O.E: The PS1 doesn't have the capacity to dream of such a game.

Your mate may well be an authority on what makes a new console, but then again....
