Ive been looking through the reviews but they all seem quite mixed and I am desperate to make sure that I spend my £30 price budget wisely.
Call of duty looks amazing however I was surprised to see it drop out of the best selling charts and that has worried me a little.

Farcry looks amazing graphics wise but is the gameplay and lastability any good? there are a few dodgy reviews commenting on the bad online multiplayer and dodgy A.I in offline play.

I was also thinking about getting Allied assualt with its expansion pack included however a few people have advised me to stay well clear of this due to dodgy gameplay elements.

What is the best first person shooter on PC at the moment? It dosnt nessecarily have to be any of the games I have just mentioned.
the characteristics I am interested in our:
game length
graphics
gameplay
online playability
and if it has a decent story then thats always a bonus...

Pity the expansion won't be released for a few months yet, CoD is way too short a game. I'm sure we'll see a sequel though.

Cheers really helpfull.
Based on everyones opnions I went with Call of Duty. Ive completed the single player campaign on easy and normal and it was some of the best fun ive ever had!

My fave missions are holding the town with lt Foley, Holding the bridge with the british regiment and the rush at stalingard with the russians.

It is a truely great game and really does capture the panic of war and the chaos which unfolds in major gun fights. Loved every minute of single player and ive now began online play.

The multiplayer is good and the developers have done a great job of capturing the atmosphere of the single player and transferring it to online play.

however during the evenings it can get increasingly difficult to find a free space in a server. I have also had trouble creating a server as when i go to create one a console window appears and I havent the foggiest what to do. any body got any suggetsions?

I highly recomend it anyway and I bought it second hand for £12 from an online river so I certainly got my moneys worth...

I agree with you, I was so dissapointed to see C&C generals under the EA label, and not a mention of Westwood studios anywhere apart from a single line tucked away in the back of the manual.

Its just not the same C&C feeling.

Ha! but thats the whole point of UT2004... shallow brainless blasting fun!! I agree the single player is more of a practice session than anything but it never pretends to be a focused offline game.

there are some amazing shooters out there note some of these are old and therefore very cheep but i still think they are worth a blast today.

old games

Soldier of fortune 2; Hyper violent fun, decent graphics, great fun on multiplayer (still a lot of people who play it)

Return to Castle Wolfenstien ; Under rated single player, Amazing multiplayer ( now comes with enemy territory multiplayer expansion) dated graphics though.

Aliens verses Predator 2 ; best atmosphere in a game ever u will be scared, varied marine ,Alien and Pedator campains , crap multiplayer and old graphics are the only negatives

new games

Call of duty ; my personal favourite , ok the single campain is sort but the time you spend basting in multiplayer makes up for it. Also while it is short the missions are pure quality exept for maybe one.Better than a massive game with loads of filler.

Unreal tournament 2004 ; another option in the fps world, to be honest i was dissapointed in this game. the array of options and game types are staggering but to me the game is just too shallow. but if u want a mindless blast this could be the one just dont expect to have to think or be moved by anything. Single player is weak.

Battle field vietnam ; Good Nam atmosphere, the sound track is awesome, great multiplayer fun you can be tactical or just have fun its up to you. Haven't played single player as this is a primarily multiplayer game but ive heard they improved the bots a lot for this one.

Hope this helps, the old games mentioned are classics and i feel should be in every fps fans collection. The new games mentioned are great too (except Unreal 2004 IMHO ) . To me call of duty fills more of your criteria than any other get it you wont be dissapointed But the choice is yours as to what you really want to get.

I wasn't impressed with the demo of Everything or Nothing, but I think that was early code and has since been improved on. Many seem to suggest it's the best EA Bond game yet and I was almost convinced myself from some of the video's I've seen. But EA isn’t my favourite developers of late, after they released Battlefield Vietnam in buggy state.

It can't be as bad as the forthcoming Goldeneye 2 though, a game which bares nothing in common with either the original game or movie and instead casts you as a rogue secret agent who has, and this is brilliant, a Golden eye. I wonder what EA are planning for the Godfather game, a Black & White style adventure game where you play the Father of God perhaps? I wouldn't put it past them.
