So just how far can this immersion thing go eh? We have Shenmue, which is soooo immersive that you can buy cans of Soda that in no way impact the game. Great.

And then there is the idea of a complete gaming world that developers think will happen one day. Imagine how dull a game would be if it were truely this grand. Having to shave in the morning, take the dog for a walk and take a virtual pis.... u get my point.

Going back to the first example, Shenmue, to be honest it was poor. For a game to break the new frontier of gaming it had so many faults hidden under its dinky graphics. The game was linear: do this then this then this then this...

The story line WAS second rate... if it were a film Shenmue would be mocked for its poor dialogue and simple scripting. So they have thousands of lines of script... they're all along the lines of "on that day... the day of the incident, did you see anything?".

This may be one of Yu Suzuki's weakest points- he pushes graphics too hard, not taking a look around once in a while. Even worse, he once said that every bit of weather in Shenmue was based on real weather data... if only he had stopped asking "is this possible" and asked himself "why should I do this?" Answer to the second question: you shouldn't! Why not just say that on some days it is dry and on some it rains, rather than all this weather data!

If only... if only.

Well we will see if there has been any improvements when Shenmue 2 comes out. Why did you finish your original post Sonic when your name is ALADIN SANE?

hmmmmm, to be honest, I no longer think shenmue was that great... personally I think Suzuki-san may have done better to use the style of the bouncer (but good!). Also, something that MUST be done in future is to get PROPER script writers- Square have been doing it for years, why not sega?

If Shenmue was a film...

Wouldn't the viewers get bored when the main character was being screened asleep? After all, that's what happened in the game.

Shenmue was good. Very interactive. I wouldn't use the word 'immersive' though.

Sorry Alad.

That was the philosophical point of Jurassic Park - "So busy thinking if it could be done they never stopped to think if it should be done".

Just thought I'd mention it.
