So just how far can this immersion thing go eh? We have Shenmue, which is soooo immersive that you can buy cans of Soda that in no way impact the game. Great.

And then there is the idea of a complete gaming world that developers think will happen one day. Imagine how dull a game would be if it were truely this grand. Having to shave in the morning, take the dog for a walk and take a virtual pis.... u get my point.

Going back to the first example, Shenmue, to be honest it was poor. For a game to break the new frontier of gaming it had so many faults hidden under its dinky graphics. The game was linear: do this then this then this then this...

The story line WAS second rate... if it were a film Shenmue would be mocked for its poor dialogue and simple scripting. So they have thousands of lines of script... they're all along the lines of "on that day... the day of the incident, did you see anything?".

This may be one of Yu Suzuki's weakest points- he pushes graphics too hard, not taking a look around once in a while. Even worse, he once said that every bit of weather in Shenmue was based on real weather data... if only he had stopped asking "is this possible" and asked himself "why should I do this?" Answer to the second question: you shouldn't! Why not just say that on some days it is dry and on some it rains, rather than all this weather data!

If only... if only.

I look forward to the day when games are truely immersive, it would be nice to play a game where you are someone else if only for a little while.. The biggest barrier for me at present is that the AI and interation of the characters has to be there for this immersion to work, and its still not close.

Our only hope is that online gaming means that real people play the other characters, this will open up gaming. Phantasy Star Online is a start but I still dream of the day that I can play a master cop in a game and chase the criminals around a busy metroplis.

It will happen, and perhaps youll be the dirty criminal that I bring down :-) ?

Another one from Steven Poole:

Why are there so many "find the switch" style games? Can't companies make something better... maybe they should make a game where all the doors are already open... and then they could think of some way to make it interesting?

I don't think that this topic was really about whether Shemue was any good or not, but discussing the way that some aspects of the game were pointless, and added nothing to the gameplay.

Personally, if I was a developer I'd try to take on the point of view that asks "yes we could do that, but what would it add to the game?"

I didn't kow that the weather in Shenmue was accurate. It's a nice touch, but who knew that, and what did it achieve? Having different weather is appropriate, as it helps you to believe in the world in which you live in, but it really didn't need to be accurate!

I like the idea of the environments in which our games are set being more interactive, such as all doors can be opened, all items that aren't nailed down picked up and moved. I can see this adding to the realism of the gaming world, and helping you to get immersed in the world and find it a more enjoyable gaming experience.

I think that with todays technology there is great potential for very different types of games.

If the level of interaction can be achieved that I hope for, I believe that highly entertaining detective sims could be made, for instance. You start the game at a murder site, and take a look around. Every object may have significance, and wouldn't just be part of the scenery.

I think that if developers are still making the same types of games as they were for the Megadrive or SNES, then people will get bored of them. There are enough innovative titles out there to keep most gamers happy, but unless fresh ideas come in, it is in ddanger of becoming stale. Next generation games need to offer better gaming experiences on levels other than the graphical one.

For the newbies:

My name when I came onto the site first (500 days ago almoist exactly) was Rav (my name). After a month this became sonicrav...and stayed that way for about a year.

Then, a couple of months back, the "tag lines" were made. I always ued quotes from david bowie (like the one I have now!). Anyway, I once vowed that after AS exams I would change my name to Ziggy Stardust (david bowie album) and start a new lease... but someone took Ziggy, so I had to use Aladin Sane (bowies's first album).

But I've decided to change it back after uproar in the Sega forum!

Amazing
