Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift

Its rubbish really. The story is pathetic and the set pieces are unbelievable (the Japanese Yakuza settling a problem with some punk kid by having a car race? I dont think so), but the only reason you would go to see this film is for the cars anyway and the races all look great. It was as fun to watch as the other two, possibly even better than #2 and there is a nice surprise at the end for fans of the series.

If you are wanting some great acting, a heart wrentching story and some brilliantly detailed drama, then this isnt for you. If you want Japanese girls in short skirts driving customised sports cars then I think you'll love it.

Paul Blart Mall Cop : Its a bit like Die Hard meets Home Alone,with a load of fat bloke gags thrown in.Its actually quite good fun and better than I was expecting it be.Its nothing new but its harmless enough fun and worth a watch 7/10.

Not recent films but ones I've watched over the last few days I've had off work:

Superbad - Heard good things about this so picked up the DVD in one of those '5 for 20 quid' deals on-line a while ago. Story is a typical for the time (last summer I believe) story about some geeky US college/high-school boys trying to get laid/become popular/get drunk. If you saw any of these types of movies over that summer (Juno, Drillbit Taylor et al) you will recognise that younger actors, Seth Rogan plays pretty much the same character he always does here except this one has a comedy 'tashce. The story progresses as you would expect for this type of film with a few funny segments but overall the un-funny scenes far outweigh those that caused a laugh. Not as funny as everyone said it was. 6/10.

Children of Men - Picked up in the same deal as mentioned above but didn't come as highly recommend as Superbad. The film is set in future Britain just after the youngest person alive (18) has just been killed. Due to the entire World being infertile this is obviously a bad thing. Our protagonist is soon contacted by one of the terrorist organisations accused of killing the boy (which is run by his ex) to help them transport a young lady to a boat offshore. I wont spoil the film for you but it is a grim representation of war and what the World could end up like if 'society' did fully collapse, this adds all kinds of atmosphere to the film and was something I 'enjoyed' seeing. Very good film and certainly worth a watch if you get a chance. 8.5/10.

Fast & Furious : The original was enjoyable enough nonsense but its 2 previous sequels were useless.Sadly.this is isn't much of an improvement on them.Last years Death Race was a lot more fun than this 5/10.

Fanboys : Set in 1998,its a really good idea based on a group of kids travelling across the US to break into George Lucas's Skywalker ranch.They are on a mission to steal a pre-release version of The Phantom Menace but it makes a fatal (no pun intended) error of being based around them doing it because of them has cancer and wont be around in 6 months to see the film.Hardly the best scenario for a teen comedy and without this element it would have been more fun for sure.Some good lines and cameo's from a few Star Wars cast members bring a smile here and there.Just I was thinking I was watching a bargain basement Kevin Smith movie he actually turned up in it as well !.Its reasonably watchable but ultimately forgettable and could have been done much better 6/10.

Anyone else seen anything that might be of interest recently ?.

The Uninvited : Above average supernatural thriller that's worth a watch if you like this kind of thing.US Blu Ray is region free as well 7.5/10.

Hush : Low budget,UK lottery funded film from first time director Mark Tonderai (he wrote it as well).Its a bit like 'The Hitcher' made by Yorkshire TV !.It only had a very limited run in selected UK cinemas so I would expect a very swift DVD release.Its hard to believe storyline is told at such a pace you almost forget how improbable the whole thing is.Just about every cliche from every similar type of film is present here,its highly unoriginal,very predictable yet something (and i'm still not sure what it is) seems to make it worthy of your attention.The acting (from its small and pretty unknown cast) is very good and although Tonderai has not got everything right at his first attempt he has shown some promise here,especially given what he has produced with what he obviously had to work with (small budget,small unknown cast & limited locations).Worth a rent when it comes out and I would be interested to see what he does next. 7/10.

Monsters v Aliens

To be honest I wasn't expecting more than an innocuous, Disney-Pixar standard, film with nice enough visuals and not a whole lot of story. What it delivered wasn't too far from that, the jokes weren't particularly well written and unless you are watching it with the whole family it isn't really worth its hour and a half duration

Zeitgeist

One of the most interesting conspiracy documentary-films I've seen in a long time. Whether or not you take what the film present as fact, you need to see this. It's only 2 hours long and presented in a way that holds your attention throughout

The Strangers

I found this one of the most overrated horrors I've seen, mainly because there wasn't really much that happened. The tension built up nicely throughout the film but .. spoiler .. the ending was awful, with the couple being stabbed in a ridiculous, tension free, way

The Big Lebowski

Coming back to this after a few years I have to question what it was I thought was so funny the first time. The first half hour has some amusing enough bits in it but the film rambles on a bit too long without a decent cache of laugh-out-loud jokes

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Despite its length, its still a visual masterpiece and a classic film based on a classic book. The battles are infinitely watchable and the build up to these throughout this film, in comparison to the others in the trilogy, is actually far more interesting with moments of tension or encounters with enemies that aren't necessarily in huge armies

Taken

Liam Neeson has a good role in this film. Although it's a slightly over the top depiction of what a CIA agent could accomplish for me it's what Bond should be. Gritty and dispatching a shedload of enemies with his bare hands. No witty comments before shooting someone and more gritty than the suave Connery and Moore. Other than the comparisons to Bond, the film is fairly tense, watchable, and packed with decent action sequences

The Rocker : Its basically a School Of Rock rip off but its harmless fun and worth a rent 7/10.
