Surely the chicken must have come first. I feel that a creature before the chicken must have evolved slightly, creating a egg laying animal. This is because when I turn the question around I see that the egg must have come from somewhere - right?!

"Intelligent Design" isnt just a good phrase, its a theory (a crap one I might add). And it doesnt state god created everything.
I think that God created everything, so intelligent design would be a good phrase to describe my views I guess.
Geffdof, what do you think of intelligent design?
I suppose there is the possibility that God created bacteria which then evolved which would be a kind of creato-evoluionism. I still think evolution is extremely flawed though.
I'm sticking with evolution.
Interestingly i came across a story in one of my old books.
Apprently a friend murdered his other friend over the arguement as to which came first the chicken or the egg. The survior insisted that it was the chicken.
But i like to deviate from the options and say bacteria, t rex and with power of evolution and relgious powers were the ones to come first.

The whole chicken or egg debate is creationism versus evolution. Creationism would assume that God created all the creaures and therefore the chicken was created by Go and hance came first. Evolution would assume that small mutations over a long period of time produced a new species, hence the egg was laid by something other than a chicken but a mutation caused a chicken to hatch from the egg.
