What prompted me to make this thread was part of Microsofts £500m advertising fund being spent on some bloke bleating a load of crap about other consoles, making out X-box is the one & only saviour.
His only two words used when commenting on the Gamecube were: "Kiddy" & "Console"…

I am sick to death of people saying that the Gamecube will be for kids & kids alone. I would like to know when they found out it was only going to be for kids. Was there a press release from Nintendo stating this? What research has been done? Have they seen the game list? Eyed up any previews?

Sure, there will be some games with kiddy themes. But every console has games with kiddy themes. Take, for example, one of the most popular consoles in gaming history, The Playstation:

Croc & it's sequels, Spyro & it's sequels, DD Quack Attack, Hercules, Aladdin, Casper, Toy Story, The Lion King, Little Mermaid, Digimon, Chicken Run, Crash Bandicoot & it's sequels…
To name but a few. Just because there are kiddy games available for a console it doesn't mean there will only be kiddy games on that console.

Look at the potential GC line-up in the first 6 months/year:

Theme Park, Survivor, Creatures, RoboCop, Dragons Lair 3d, Pikmin, Halo, Duke Nukem, Monkey Balls, F1, Ferrari 360 Challenge, Rush Club, Virtual Velocity Racing, Racer dev. by Saffire, Hot Wheels, Jeremy McGrath Supercross, Thunder Rally, F Zero Cube???, Animal Forest, Rebirth, Luigi's Mansion, Zelda, Pokemon game, Mario Game, Mario Kart, 13xDisney Games (inc mickey mouse adventures), PD2, DK Cube, Starfox Adventures (was dinosaur planet), Donkey Kong Racing, Kameo, Conkeys other bad fur day, Grabbed by the ghoulies, Super Smash Bros. Melee, WaveRace: BlueStorm, Metroid?, excite bike cube?, NBA Court Side, 1080 Cube?, Too Human, Eternal Darkness, Thornado, StarWars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2, PSOv2, Sonic Adventure, Planet Harrier, Batman, VIP, Virtual Velocity, NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, MK5, Turok??, All Star Baseball, Crazy Taxi, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2, Extreme g3, NFL 2002, Madden NFL 2002, SSX: SE, FIFA, Harry Potter, James Bond, Mission impossible 2, Tony Hawks 3, Stuart little, Jackie chan adventures, Spider-man Movie, RE4, RE0, Crash bandicoot, Engalus, Silent space, X-Isle: Dinosaur Island, Tetris, WWF, Die Hard: Next Generation, E.T., Galleon, Picasso, Stunt driver, Title defense boxing, Tiny Toon adventures & some Army Men Games…

My belief is that 4% of the above games would be enjoyed by the younger market only, 13% of the games would appeal to the older market only, leaving the remaining 83% playable & enjoyable to all ages (except for the Army Men games ). It sometimes amazes me to find how pig ignorant some people can be. How did they decide from this that the GC was going to be a kiddy console? It won't exactly be an adult only console, but no-one can boast to owning one of those.

More importantly how come gore and blood was adult, games like Resident Evil i laugh at the same way i laughed at Evil Dead when iw as younger. These are more like Teenage games and Adults are grown up to find games like Luigi enjoyable and isn't annoyed because a bloke has his head blown off!

Yes I did thanks.
Many, MANY uses.

And I will never drop the Lylat Wars is rubbish thing.

It's the one genuine thing I can offer to the Nintendo posts, having owned one until LYLAT WARS IS RUBBISH I realised that the console was aimed pretty much at the younger gamer LYLAT WARS IS RUBBISH AND A CON.

Which is cool, the younger gamer should have a console geared towards them LYLAT WARS SUCKS, but I dont get why they have the most expensive games, considering parents will be paying most of the time.

I thought, considering I bought LYLAT WARS SUCKS THE PONY a N64 and paid £250, a shocking waste of money for what it can do.
What games did I like?

Blastcorps, Goldeneye, a wrestling LYLAT WARS BLOWS one that was cool and that was about it.
Overpriced, easy to complete LYLAT WARS IS THE DEVIL and a basically ugly machine.

So, in summary?

LYLAT WARS= OLD MAN'S EXPENSIVE BAGGY PANTS

Ok, can we drop the Lylat Wars thing now please?

Still, if you paid £60 for it, I hope you had fun with your rumble pack.

Personal appeal is in paying £60 for a game and not finishing it in under an hour, 1st time, no continues needed.

I'm not an Uber-Gamer and resorted to turning the box over and over in my hands, looking for the codes to access the main game instead of a demo.

The same is true of Mairo Kart 64, but that didn't stop it being a good game. I guess it depends on where the personal appeal lies?

Lylat Wars.

All I'm going to say.

A Chimp playing with his feet whilst reading Bunty could not have any hard of a time completing this.

Yep, Nintendo make games for kids. Thank God!

I really don't see what the problem with this is, every game that I've played on the N64 that could be deemed a 'kids' title (that being one for young goats?) has been immediately accessible. You can pick it up, and start playing no problems. Great. When you get a little further into the game you begin to realise that you are on a steep learning curve.

The more experienced gamers will zip through the early levels, but will find it quite challenging to complete, especially in your typical Rare or Nintendo game like Mario64 or Donkey Kong 64. I found that the early levels were easy, but when it comes down to taking every challenge, such as locating every star or banana, then it can be tough, and it is fun!

I have Tiggers Honey Hunt for the N64. When you've stopped laughing I have to say that certain parts of this game, that IS aimed at children, are tough. Every level has a time challenge that really tests you. This isn't essential to complete the game, but needs to be done to show 100% completed. A child that couldn't do it would not have his or her progress hampered in the game, and could continue to enjoy it right through to the end, without worry about all of the extra.

Also is Microsoft are willing to dismiss the 'kiddy' market so quickly, shouldn't they remember that todays kids are tomorrows mature gamers, and with the amount of titles for more mature gamers coming to the GAMECUBE, what reason would anyone have to move away from a Nintendo console?

If Nintendo weren't making games that are suitable for children, then I probably wouldn't be getting a GAMECUBE. I have two young children, and Malibu loves to watch me play games like Donkey kong, Banjo Tooie, and Zelda. When she's a little older she'll love to play these games too. Whenever I switch my PC on she will come sit with me and wait for me to show her some footage of GAMECUBE games that I have downloaded. So I'll enjoy the GAMECUBE, and so will the rest of my family, and that's what make Nintendo games great.

I thought Halo is an XBox exclusive. Afterall, MS own Bungie, the developers.

Also, what is this Pikmin thing?

GameBoy, I suppose.

Originally, all consoles were meant for kiddies and tech-heads.

Until Sony.
