These are from aint-it-cool.com, a pretty reliable site on what's good and what isn't.
See what you think and, I'm sad to say I'm not suprised:

"It tosses plot at us in ungraceful chunks and just lays there, inert, like we're watching someone play a game for us with a cheat guide open and steering them through. There's no tension. Everything is just handed to Lara, and we're never once engaged, because we never once actually know what the hell is happening.
Why is Noah Taylor in this film? Why is Chris Barrie in this film? Why does Iain Glenn give such an incredibly painful performance as the bad guy in this film?Where is the sense of fun?
TOMB RAIDER is neither the end of modern cinema nor the guilt-free pleasure machine that lifelong mammary fan Roger Ebert paints it as. It is a lifeless movie from a truly horrible commercial filmmaker. It is a misstep in the starring career of a promising lead actress. And it's a major setback for two producers who have a great slate of material. I hope this ends up being an expensive lesson that spurs everyone involved to do better things in the future."

"This film is ugly, boring and uninspired.
In a single shot, they manage to defecate not only upon the beauty of Angkor Watt, but in a blink…. They voided upon Venice…. In a single transition they made both places look like total logs.
The plotline was overly convoluted and badly told onscreen. There are random left turns that are not surprising, just boring. There is no sexuality in this movie… Plenty of alleged chest, but no titillation.

The lights are never on in TOMB RAIDER… except to over light all the sets and make them look cheap and fake…. People should be imprisoned for making Angkor Watt look pedestrian and ugly. One of mankind’s greatest achievements and it looks like crap here…. How do you do that? Is there a class in film school somewhere that teaches one how to make beauty plain? Does it come before or after the class on making sure to WINK at the camera every 3 minutes?
Do not waste a dime on this! "

. . .

There you go kids, another Mummy Returns special effect laden t**d.

Oh yes.

I got into Manga through Akira, and the only other one I like is Ghost in The Shell.

Top.

Good point, I agree again
(this is scary)

What I'm saying about the big summer movies is, they can be done with fun, wit, a sense of style and some effort.

The Matrix, Charlie's Angels, Speed...these were all popcorn movies, yet bothered to tell a story, have good fun with it, be enjoyable and try to be a bit more than just guns and chases.

The Mummy Returns - Pretentious, overlong, awful script, bad effects at the end.

Charlie's Angels - stupid, fun, you can see they had a blast making it, light, made you laugh and had Drew Barrymore naked in a sheet.

They are big, loud stupid films but know it and don't try to claim anything else.

Goaty I do see one good point about these massive SE movies. They give our publishing houses masses of cash, muchmore than they spand making the movies, so they have budgets to get big stars to do little movies i.e. Brad Pitt in Seven and Fight Club and Kevin Spacey in Seven and American Beauty!!!

Yeah, we agree..odd
*s*

But those films like American Beauty and Fight Club that try to say something a little more than "Look, big guns!" tend to not do well at the box office.

(Sorry, this is going to be a long one again, I feel most passionate on this subject)

Fight Club was well recieved, but in The States it made nothing.
People went because it was Brad Pitt, but as soon as word got round that "it was weird", people stopped going.
Same over here, Alexander Walker from the Dailt Mail called it "An affront against decent society" and demanded people not see it.

So what happened?
They flocked to it but said "It's weird, I didnt get that at all" because it challenged you, made you think, tried to be different.

American Beauty, same thing. A stunning film that said "Hey you know what? America isn't that brilliant, and it's not perfect having a nice house and a good job".
It spoke for millions of people all over the world that weren't happy, despite doing what we are told is the right thing to do.
Get the house, get the car, get the family and you will be ok.
This movie said "Not really, you need to look closer than that". It was well recieved but made little money.

The Mummy Returns had one of the biggest openings in the past 5 years.
So what?

Does that make it a good film? Does that mean you will remember that movie and it will make you think for days afterwards?

No,it just means they sold it well and we bought it.

Not all movies have to art and profound statements on life.
Just don't insult us.
The Matrix didnt, The X Men didnt, Braveheart didn't.

Treat us like people that can think and maybe, just maybe we want more than guns and car chases.

But that's just my opinion

I asked SR to get one copy of the Skulls so that you can get it for your next FAD, and I think it may come sooner than I expected!!!

I totally agree, which is strange for a discussion between us. And yes seven does have one of the best film endings, up there with Braveheart and American Beauty!!

I think it comes down to fear on the part of the studios.

They invest millions and millions in the big movies, and need to recoup it back as quickly as possible,so they stick with what they know made money last time.

But the public get sick of them, which is why Pearl Harbour is being trashed by the critics.

Meanwhile, those smaller movies that take risks? The studios are unwilling to invest in something that may not be a massive grossing mega-hit.
So they get onto a few screens and then hit DVD, where they make their money because word of mouth spreads and people think "Well, why not?" and watch it.

I was watching Se7en with the commentary on, and David Fincher, the director, was saying that the studio wanted to change the ending because "nobody would like it"
It took Fincher, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman saying "We wont do this unless you keep this ending" to ensure we have one of the best and most remembered endings in recent cinema. (I wont spoil it for anyone that hasnt seen it).

Why are studios so scared to take risks?
Why treat us like idiot children and slop out summer hit after summer hit, saying "it sold last year" whilst securing the tie-ins with fast food, books, posters etc.

One of the biggest and most expensive series of movies starts this year, "The Fellowship of The Ring"..
Yet people are looking forward to it already?
Why?
The books are loved the world over, and I pray they pull this off.
Financed by New Line, no other studio would touch it budget wise and they all said "too expensive, who wants to watch wizards and goblins?"

Well, the entire world does actually it would seem.
So New Line have risked bankruptcy for these movies, and I just hope they work out, because it's rare for a studio to have the courage to do this.

A perfect example of treating film as more than money is Requiem for A Dream.

In the states, if your movie gets an NC17 rating, Blockbuster will not stock it, Wal-Mart will not touch it and you have a handful of cinemas willing to show it.
Artisan (the production company that put up the money) were told to cut it for a more palatable R version.
Artisan refused to alter the movie in any way and said "Stuff it, we'll make our money back overseas, this movie cannot be edited, that goes against the entire point of it".

Bravo to Artisan, they were rewarded with Ellen Burstyn getting a best actress nom at last years Oscar. They had faith in their movie and their audience and they were rewarded well for it.
A stunning movie.

Or...Tomb Raider.

You choose.
