So... how do u solve this? Simple... make a Holodeck!
Ok, so it's not easy- but there is a way...
Does anyone here know Jez San? He's head of Argonauts, and in the top 100 rich list after having sold the hardware part of the company. Anyway, before he sold the company, they reveilled a new display device that escentially projected a 3d image above it! Now... if only they could get an and release it! (Although no news has been heard)
Another idea is one that the US military uses to track its tanks. It's a horizontal screen that you look down onto, but the image is in 3d! Fantastic... if only someone could make a cheap version of it!
The final idea for display devices that I have just remembered is a new type of TV... the program is filmed from several angles, and these are then converted into a signal to the TV, where they are remade... in 3d! Like the virtual boy's display, but only you don't need to look into gogles, and when finnished will be i full colour and high resolution. This idea is being developed by some top Japanese company (I think that it is Toshiba).
Now. How to interact with this world? Well, we've tried 3D gloves, and big virtual reality boxes are a bit big! But thinking about it, all controllers are the same- plastic with coloured buttons on... can no-noe think of something better? Maybe some sort of eye-tracking device that could tell how far away you were looking? Maybe not.. but something needs to be used!
Anyway, my final point. Some of you may ask "Why not play games as they are... anyway, this new 3D environment would be too hard to get lots of people to adopt, and will also alienate so many gamers." The answer is this... "Eventually in the future of gaming this idea will be faced... and conquered. It's enevitable, and this being the FOG means that it's totally relevant"
I'll see u in 50 years when we plug ourselves into games ala eXistenZ ;)

They've released newer, cheaper models more recently... they are about 500 quid now... and are only a little bigger than sunglasses... they've even had support on quite a few PC titles...
however due to the size of the screen... the max resolution isnt amazing... and 500 quid is a pretty hefty sum of cash to pay for something that most people probably think will just end up stuck on a shelf after the first five minutes playing?

Opps... sorry man... :)
but yes... I know what you mean... Its always what I think of first with VR now... although... it might just be hidsight... I just cant figure out why Nintendo thought it would be a success?
hmmm... we
> certainly have 3d games... but they are displayed in 2d.
Its only a matter of time before things change... In the ear;y eighties, people used to argue wether GUI's (of WIMP's to stick with the timeframe :) ) would ever become more than a noveltie... and that the command line interface was too valuable a tool, and that many of the commands were too complicated to represent in a GUI system...
Things move on all the same... as long as theres a profit in it... (which given the growth of the video games industry, there will a one point be a very big profit)
And this new format would
> need a new input too
Theres a load of good VR interfaces already designed... Just gotta get them onto the market
Anyway, back to the 3d gaming...
hmmm... we certainly have 3d games... but they are displayed in 2d. Imagine playing a 3d metal gear solid in a 3d format... you could focus in the distance to see guards there... only to realise that while you've been looking there someone has come round the corner infront of you... on a 3d screen you can see almost everything that happends easily. In 3d this would be impossible, and this would add a new dimension (no pun intended) to gaming.
And this new format would need a new input too

But thats because of the limitations of the 2D interface... Not because we dont have 3D games...
As for the 3d VR gogles...
> brings back memories of the diaster that was the Vitual Boy... that
Not really... those goggles were really rather cheap, and only displayed red and black... I was thinking more of standard 3D goggles which look more like sunglasses and display colour images...
As for the 3d VR gogles... brings back memories of the diaster that was the Vitual Boy... that 3d ninty console that flopped for so many reasons! (If anyone really wants to know these reasons ask me in this toipic and I'll tell ya)
Ciao

Little blokes fighting on the floor of
> your livng room etc...
They've done this on an Arcade game, back in the eighties I think?
They also, currently, use Dynamic holograms in industry... although I doubt theres going to be a home release any time soon...
3D games ARE 3D... its just Monitors can only represent 2D (in the same way that on TV, they film within a 3D environment (set, location, etc), but this can only displayed in 2D) ...
Its far easier and immensly cheaper to trick the eyes into thinking they are seeing a 3D image by using two 2D images...
However, I suspect that theres either going to have to be a successful business app created that exploits the 3D environment enough to require the use of VR goggles or (most likely) the price of flat screen production is reduced (by mass demand and new production techniques) which will allow the cheap and practacle production of goggles to be made.
The future of gaming after TV consoles it holograms.

lol! Still... FOG! However far in the future... maybe make a "Hyper FOG" just for me and my strange mind!
