Potential yes.

Is the gaming/movie industry crying out for more space? Not really.

DVDs are cheap so until 1 Blu-Ray disc costs less to buy than 2 or more DVDs nobody's going to be too fussed about changing format.

Unless the hype and demand is right, there isn't much reason to confuse the consumer with an unneeded new format.

Yeah and at least you're not being forced into it. High def is just a nice thing you can take advantage of if you have the money. Much better than gambling everything on something and hoping people will pay the extra bundle.

Mind you, if anyone can pull it off its the Sony marketing department - they specialise in BS. The only other company who can make shat look like gold is EA.

Agreed. Aside from having to change discs every now and again (why nobody makes a console with a multi-changer I'll never know), there aren't really going to be any problems with space on DVD's in the near future.

My point was that Blu-Ray has a lot more potential. DVD's are unquestionably very good for space, but Blu-Ray will be better.

I suppose it's something [for MS] to shout about, certainly shows they intend to keep the 360 going for sometime.

Its still pretty expensive in the States. Nobody I know there has one or knows somebody who does. HDTV will probably take a few years yet before it really takes off. The price really has to come down everywhere before anyone can afford it.

Are any of these things (HDTV etc) much cheaper/more standard in america?

If so that might have more to do with the console adoption of these things (if broadband wasn't everywhere in the states for next to nothing Xbox Live would still be some way away, but over here we still have to get the lines installed and it's supposedly a lot more hassle than in the states).

Investing in the format is one thing - telling the public that they're going to go out and buy it is another. Try telling these people that they should go out and buy a £400 console if thats going to be the price tag. Yeah, loads of people have a PS2 now, but they sure as hell didn't spend £400 on it. I bet a huge amount of them didn't even pay £200.

Its like HDTV. Nice to have, but you won't be seeing it in millions of houses anytime soon - particularly here. As much as this Blu-ray could be a success, Sony could also well fall flat on their backside with it. Not everyone will be looking at the format inside, they will look at the games and performance. And if theres little difference, why would these people fork out a load extra for something that looks practically the same ?

Then theres things like online play and the games available. Sony's online service doesn't even come close to XBox Live and they seem to be losing more and more exclusives to the point where its really reversed now in Microsoft's favour. Its only the whole "we're the cool one to own" Sony marketing thats really blocked alot of people from seeing that.

Better as in 'practically the same as the 360 except with a new style of controller'? Oh and it might just have more to do with the titles.

And the Xbox will be using DVDs, which IS the better format at the moment considering that most games are published on them at this moment in time.

This was covered on Channel 4 news the other night, at least in terms of disc format.

Smart money seems to be backing Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Sony owns its own movie studios, and many more studios - including most of the big players - have signed up to the Blu-Ray format.

They even mentioned the fact that PS3 is going to ensure that millions of Blu-Ray players will be in peoples homes already by the time the new formats reach us in terms of movies.

For my money, PS3 is the better machine with the better format, and MS should make the most of the 6-months to a year head start.

It doesn't appear that compression or space will be much of an issue for either format as far as games go.
