It was crap.

But getting a controller designed specifically for use with a machine that all developers make their games work with is better for obvious reasons.
As for the level playing field, this

If on the PC you were playing against someone on a PC struggling to run the game then yes it does.
Perhaps the point it best illustrated with resolution/draw distance. If their PC only allows a certain amount of resolution before distant object become blurred and your PC is more powerful and so allows you to see further and clearer that is an advantage and the playing field is not level.
Upgrading a PC to compete properly/at top level is not my idea of fun.

But some developers just let you download the games for a fee cutting down on costs and on a PC a simple addictive game made by one programmer can still sell reasonably and make a profit.

No you don't know that at all.
The entire setup + dragging it round someone else's house really isn't my idea of fun. The whole headset + Large TV + Plus some live games doing split screen + ease of setup + no software upgrades + a balanced playing field as far as hardware goes is greatly preferable.

Some wierd anime series on MTV2, with lots of cartoon shagging and matrix style wierdness

Excellent!
I'm just saying, they aren't THAT difficult, cheating online has massively reduced due to anti cheat software and I know that if you had played the likes of Unreal Tournament 2004 you wouldn't really be that excited about LIVE.
