And just to add to it, the release of the film pretty much lands on my birthday ! The old film is one of my favourites so its cool to have the new one arrive for my birthday. ;-)
I've been watching trailers for it since around Christmas time, but I've managed to avoid seeing this one thats supposedly doing the rounds online that shows the Martian war machines. Don't want to see them in all their glory till I see the film. :-)
Gonna be going on Thursday 30th June seeing as they start showing the film in Basildon a day early. ;-)

I thought the same thing.
The name "War Of The Worlds" doesn't even seem fitting because there was never really any war. Like Tim Robbins said "it's an extermination". Then of course the aliens snuffed it anyway and that was the end of that.

They should have taken the action, whacked it up to 110% and added a short sharp back-story/emotional part.
I say the credits were the best bits; the film wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. A little under-realised, perhaps.
Well, each to his own, an opinion is an opinion - hopefully some of you enjoyed it.
Can someone explain to me exactly why the Tripods become weak and vunerable? I understand how the birds were the ones who carried disease (from human blood right?) to the Tripods which consequently saw them fall but was this through having it sprayed on them by the Tripods?

Not a majority then. parp! :D

Solar power?
Best bit of the film for me? Seeing the fallen tripod resting against the building with bits slowly falling off, very beautiful shot.

Not really. pages 122 to 158.

That would have brought nothing more to the movie except repeating any other battle sequence where everyone dies.

Like they did in the original book?

Admittedly, I did find that rather stupid. Even moreso because he survived...however, if there was a huge alien invasion going on, wouldn't you want to see it to believe it?
The whole

Bringing a sense of reality to the movie?

Fair opinion.
One thing that didn't make sense, but didn't really detract from the movie...: At the beginning, when all electrical circuitry was disabled by the EMP, how was that guy using a digital camera?
And why weren't there any old cars?
There were a few things that bought my overall impression down though. I was rather hoping for a nice big battle to culminate the movie, so needless to say it was a bit disappointing when the tripods just started to keel over. The way his son decided to walk off into battle was ridiculous, and it seemed to me that Spielberg wanted to get him off screen pronto once he realised that he sucked. The whole little screaming girl thing did nothing except annoy me.
Generally very good though, I'd watch it again.
