The same could be said for many places on the internet.
and proper commercialism could be said to have destroyed the bartering system which created an even stronger sense of community.
"You may NOT have the dawning realisation that all malls are the same and have destroyed the notion of a "high street" and the sense of community it provokes"
Bingo. Everything falls down to target audiences and marketing, 'family' of employees and crap like that. Temporary robots on minimum wage that genuinely and rightfully so don't give a crap about the company they work for.
Bit corny to say, but where's the heart? Only just realised it's the complete lack of community that makes me hate these places. Or at least dislike them to the point of feeling quite empty.
If I was to run a business, I just couldn't do it, at all, without some sort of community.. and not the stupid clappy pat-on-back 'family' that really winds me up.. but a bunch of people who genuinely want to be part of this and have a great time doing it. I work for a guy who I can't describe as anything other than an overweight used cars salesman, we came to blows yesterday over how he runs his business (false advertising, breaking trades descriptions act and generally just seeing every customer as a target instead of a person), and he reduced my hours (in a cowardly fashion, also). Oops. One day I'll learn to keep my head down and just work instead, and perhaps I really really should, I need the money.
I really need a direction to focus in. I'm a great believer of 'if you build it, they will come' so I just need to sit down, sort out what I need to do and work on it as solidly as I can. Damn my screwy head and my persistent laziness.
I do wonder however how many rules there really needs to be before they make the world 'perfect'. Moses said 10, deadly sins suggest 7, God knows how many the law suggests. I'm babbling, but the basis is that rules should be guidelines and when there's too many of them it just makes things worse.
What am I on about.. I'm supposed to be getting ready.

But aren't they just asking for trouble? I can imagine one of these flash mob things, all 400+ bedecked hoody tops and burberry clad fake chavas, all acosting people at the doors for "20p for me bus fare" and "Lend us a tab mannn".
Hmmmm. Ideas...

You WILL shop in climate-controlled, security patrolled conditions.
You MAY purchase goods and services if you behave in a manner we deem acceptable.
You MAY gaze wistfully at the trinkets & baubles that denote a successful lifestyle
You MAY rack up thousands of pounds of debt with easily obtainable store credit cards
You MAY eat at one of the many franchised eateries that employ people at basic wage
You MAY purchase threatening garments in sporting goods stores but not wear them
You MAY purchase cigarettes at newsagents inside but not smoke them inside
You MAY fill the empty hole in your life with useless objects that denote you are a fulfilled and serene person
You MAY drink a refreshing latte made with Fair Trade beans to appease your middle class white guilt at quaffing overpriced status drinks
You may NOT wear garments that obscure your face from our video surveillance systems
You may NOT swear
You may NOT question the insidious and draconian "rules" that govern how you, the consumer, may spend your money
You may NOT have the dawning realisation that all malls are the same and have destroyed the notion of a "high street" and the sense of community it provokes
You may NOT suddenly realise to take your business somewhere that does not tell you how to act, what to wear and how to behave
All customers are advised that you are not an active participant in your environment, you are merely an annoyance that must be tolerated by big business in their pursuit of profit margins.
Management reserve the right to refuse admittance to anybody that is able to see past these pseudo "for your protection" rules and takes their business elsewhere.
