Crossbob may I suggest a more simple musical instrument?
A triangle

Whoops, think I might need to learn the triangle.

It's creativity, dexterity, some memory and a bit of flair.

None of which involves getting a Phd in musical theory.

Some of the best songs are infact mind-crushingly simple.

and come on, if crossbob has difficulty with his SATS, what's he going to be like trying to learn complex musical concepts? :' {

Yeah of course the theory is massively important, but the theory alone isn't all you need. The Creativity and theory together are what makes an awesome musician, like Daniel Beddingfield.

it's possible to be expressive without a lot of theory, but it makes it a lot easier, especially live. A player with a good knowledge of theory will be able to improvise freely and make the show more interesting for the audience, whereas someone who doesn't have this will only be able to perform the same identical part night-in, night-out.

It's creativity though, you can learn the theory inside-out but be average.

I think the intellegence aspect relates more to classical music where you have to really ponder how it will sound on a massive scale.

The beatles were on loads of acid and wrote some of the most creative, bizarre but nonetheless popular music of their generation.

nah, I'm a reasonably intelligent, slightly above average player with a below par knowledge of musical theory.
