that's called plagiarism and is complete crap.
I already said ages ago that I was talking about the most accomplished guitarists. 99% of punk guitarists are far from accomplished.

But it's possible and can be done. What you've just described is how a lot of people learn in their bedrooms etc. Some people get started by copying a song through trial and error, a lot of punk stuff is infact another bands riff with a few notes changed. Musical theory needed? I think not.
