I'm considering this http://www.dabs.com/uk/productView.htm?quicklinx=31G6 because I know it'll take my P4 2.8. But if it can take a P4Extreme 3.2, I'll invest in a new processor at the same time.

Cheers.

Well the X850 apparently shipped yesterday, the rest of the stuff is due to ship on Tuesday, so hopefully by the end of next week I'll have my very own mini-behemoth!

Kind of screws up the deadline I had, seeing as I was supposed to have the other PC built by Wednesday, but as said before - I ain't going PC-less, no way!

When do you rekon you'll have the parts then bullet? Wanting to see that X850 XT PE performance! I'm almost certainly going PCI-E now. Might hang on another month and wait for the Venice CPU's in the 3500+ 939. Ohh..OCUK have them for pre-order now :D

So my choice wasn't a bad one then?

I couldn't really choose the Mobo as it was in a bundle, and I'm not bothered about Dual-Core.

Don't know if it was this thread or my other one, but I did say this isn't a total rebuild, just something to keep me up to date.

Besides, if anything, my reasoning for this is so it can handle my shiny new X850 :D A Geforce4 would really be the achilles heel in a computer like this!

They will not be discontinued in June. Sure, the desktop processors last orders are for June, but the socket itself will live on indefinitely for mobile processors. And it isn't like as soon as they stop making it that it actually gets slower. Dual channel RAM access isn't the huge performance boost everyone seems to think it is. Bandwidth goes up, efficiency goes down and it makes it harder to get the best overclock. Yes, socket 939 is the way to go, but it doesn't make socket 754 pointless.

And seriously folks, pretty much all Winchester cores, be it the 3000, 3200, 3500 or 3800 will hit around 2.6+ GHz. Overclocking is getting ever easier and will always save you a couple of hundred.

Socket 754 is dead!, they will soon be discontinued in June, if you went 939 you could future proof your system for dual core.

The only thing about DFI is that if you get a defective board you have to RMA it directly to DFI rather than getting a straight swap from the shop. Sounds like a lot of hassle if you are desperate to build a comp and the board turns up DOA.

Good stuff, though i would have went with the DFI lanparty UT NF3 250GB over the Epox.

Isn't this a rather pointless upgrade?
