What does being a Godparent involve?

I'm godmother to my niece and when she was christened I had to vow or something that I'll teach her about God, but I haven't so far.

Do you reckon I should take her to church or something? My godparents never took me to church :o( Infact no one knows for sure who my Godparents are.

You're forgetting that a large amount of people neither know nor care what the whole ceremony is supposed to be about.

Godparents are sponsors into the church at certain rites. I think being chosen as a Godparent is very honourable indeed, and the "vow" is pretty much a reiteration of your faith. To reject satan and all that..

The responsibility is to be an example of Christ's love for this child. My sister christened her baby after birth while she was in an incubator with breathing problems. I was the Godmother by proxy..which means, someone stood in for me because I was on the other side of the world at the time. Even so, we prayed over the phone together for little Yvetta's lungs to get stronger.

The baptism is to cleanse the soul of venial sin from the former life...or so, I've heard. The Christening is to bring Jesus into your heart.

It's all traditional ritualism, yeah..but, ones I believe in wholeheartedly. I had Godparents at my Baptism, First Holy Communion, and at my Confirmation. All different people, of course..but, they're all such wonderful, beautiful people that I feel so honoured to have a part of my life.

Tis a blessing all the way around. :o)~~

I really have no idea. At a guess, my friend's parents. And probably because to them, it seems like a fashionable thing to do. ?

.. My Godmother just phoned up half hour ago. Not spoken to her for a few years.. :^) Weird.

I'm Godmother to a friend's little girl but was told not to talk to her about God. Lovely. Mainly because neither of the parents don't believe, and have no wish to, in God. I just enjoy being there for her and the parents whenever needed, maybe give her advice when she's older, teach her how to roll her first joint and recommend great music.. :^)
But wouldn't teach her about God because that's not my area.
T'is fun.

My brother's Godparents are great, they bought him a football table this Christmas and a MASSIVE Lego set the year before. I got stuck with a divorced bloke that used to be married to a florist but now spends his days drinking, etc. and doesn't know when Christmas is.

Don't have any, wouldn't really want any.
Why would anyone appreciate their dad's mate have any standing in their lives.

Seems a bit silly.

I have godparents (!), both of which are, actually, Christian. But they're decent enough just to give me money rather than a Bible, or a list of sins. They're both lovely people.

Yeah the idea is you're supposed to guide them towards being a good christian although most people just swap "christian" for "person"
