There are a lot of students, most of whom are fine.
There are decent families, same.
And decent other people.
And there are lowlives. I'm going to try to keep clear of labels like chavs, because not all the ash-holes are chavs (see the 'most of whom are fine', above), and not all the 'chavs' (by my definition at least) are ash-holes.
I've met a few who've seemed nice enough. And certainly plenty who don't go out of their way to be obnoxious to strangers.
But then there are the lowlives.
People who pick fights with random people on a night out, people who are offensive to strangers. People who ask for money in the street (not even homeless people, though I'm sure you all know the kind I mean) then hassle you when you refuse. Random kids who throw stones at passers-by.
I have no idea how far you can morally legitimately go in response to lowlife provocation,
or for that matter how far you should go.
But I'm pretty sick of soaking up bull***t from strangers.
So, general comments on how you personally would deal with these kinds of people please.
And a questionaire - What do you do when:
- You're walking alone at night, a stranger is highly offensive to you
- Same, but you're with your girlfriend
- Walking alone at night, someone acts in a threatening / intimidating manner towards you
i) If you think you could take him
ii) And if you couldn't
- Same, but you're with your girlfriend
i) Could take him
ii) Couldn't
- A couple of random kids throw stones at you as you're walking somewhere
i)You're alone
ii)You're with mates
iii)You're with girlfriend
- Someone stops you in the street and asks for a small amount of money, and is offensive to you if/when you refuse
- Same, but they ask to use your mobile
Some of the above scenarios have happened to me in the last couple of months, at keast one of each 'type', and I really don't know how you should deal with it, or how far you can reasonably go to protect your dignity
- You're walking alone at night, a stranger is highly offensive to you= Ignore that person.
- Same, but you're with your girlfriend.= In your face I don't have one.
- Walking alone at night, someone acts in a threatening / intimidating manner towards you
i) If you think you could take him= take him out.
ii) And if you couldn't= try to take him out
- Same, but you're with your girlfriend
i) Could take him= I told you you fool
ii) Couldn't= Rob his girl.
- A couple of random kids throw stones at you as you're walking somewhere
i)You're alone= Put up my umbrella.
ii)You're with mates= throw them back
iii)You're with girlfriend= make sure shes real then get her to shoot them.
- Someone stops you in the street and asks for a small amount of money, and is offensive to you if/when you refuse= Walk away with the cash.
- Same, but they ask to use your mobile= Tell them them to sling their hook.
> attacking people with weapons when they deserve it.
Sorry that made me chuckle :-) Mental picture of someone charging towards some guys with a pole held up in the air screaming "gahhhh!!!" sort of Japanese ninja style. Brilliant.
*gets coat*
They tend to wet themselves and run away.
In fact, five of them will run away from two of us.
> Oh and if anyone threatens me to hand over anything I'd jst give them
> it.
I'd do the same actually.
More because I know I've got almost feck all to lose usually.
A couple of neds asked me for a light once I told them I didn't have one (as I don't smoke), politely even, "Sorry mate, don't have one". Walk another fifteen feet and tehy jumped me (and a mate) from behind.
We'd have taken them if they'd said they'd fight, but they wimps jumped on us from behind. Also, I'd have seen their face and then given my older brother a phonecall (it's the 6 year-old thing to do, but I know for a fact that he'd whoop their behinds), and then I'd have had the last laugh.
Ahahahaha.
But we haven't seen them since.
Damn them.
:-(
Anyway, yeah, if there was more than two or three people I'd give them whatever I had.
I'd take two if I knew they didn't have a weapon, or there was a metal pole or soemthing nearby I could grab, as I'm not scared of attacking people with weapons when they deserve it.
> Just get her out the road fast. Possibly swear at them, possibly
> throw stones back at them.
I unfortunately landed myself and a few friends a beating for throwing a stone back at some chavs. Unless you're completely positive that you can take them, forget it and walk away.
Was a totally unfair beating as well. We were out-numbered and most of them looked a couple of years older.
Retaliation of the physical kind should be no more than a last resort. I learnt the hard way. Don't make the same mistake.
A lot of chavs in this area who try and harass anyone in their way, or try and get something for nothing.
However, There aren't many here, and I'm a big bloke(6 ft 3 and fairly built shoulders etc) so most of them (sigh...) seem to think I'm "alright" because im bigger than them.
But I've encountered it before and it's always best to ignore it.
At a Train station the other week, a group of chavs or whatever you wanna label them as, came up to me and my friends and tried to intimidate us. We didnt say much, because they were drunk and out of line, and after a bit they went onto someone else. The guy they picked on called them a load of "pikey c***s" who would only start on him because they were in a group. He ended up getting his head kicked in. You cant win, so the best thing to do is just not talk back. Always.
You just can't understand these people though...what goes through their heads??
> - You're walking alone at night, a stranger is highly offensive to

I take it you mean in a "what you looking at ya £$%!&%" type comments? Depending on my mood, I'll say "you clearly". In general though I try to avoid conflict and just ignore them and look away.
> - Same, but you're with your girlfriend
Try to avoid conflict even more.
> - Walking alone at night, someone acts in a threatening /
> intimidating manner towards you
> i) If you think you could take him
I don't generally back down and scurry away like a frightened badger. I'll not provoke a fight, but I won't back down either.
> ii) And if you couldn't
As above, but only because there's never been someone who I knew I just couldn't take. Nine times out of then I could, and on the tenth time, I'll chance it.
> - Same, but you're with your girlfriend
> i) Could take him
> ii) Couldn't
Here I have someone else to consider, so I'd try and avoid conflict. If however things got more heated, I'd not hesitate to fight if need be to protect her.
> - A couple of random kids throw stones at you as you're walking

> i)You're alone
> ii)You're with mates
Swear at them and walk menacingly towards them. Every time that's ever happened they've run off. If they didn't, I'm not quite sure what I'd do.
> iii)You're with girlfriend
Just get her out the road fast. Possibly swear at them, possibly throw stones back at them.
> - Someone stops you in the street and asks for a small amount of

Ignore them. Generally saying "nah mate" stops them getting offensive, because they know you'll probably phone the police if they do harass you anymore.
> - Same, but they ask to use your mobile
I'd offer to make a call for them. Or if I felt it was them seeing if I was worth mugging, I'd possibly lie and say I didn't have one.
> Some of the above scenarios have happened to me in the last couple of

The most dignified response you can give is to ignore them and not let them bother you. It also happens to be the safest. In the past I used to be a bit more abrasive with neds. It wasn't big and it wasn't clever. I've had a knife pulled on me before, but I still won that fight. Thing is though, most people aren't in the forces and trained in various forms of un-armed combat.
Nowadays though, violence isn't so cool. And especially if I'm with a girl, I want to avoid conflict and protect her. That's far more dignified than squaring up to a ned.
I've -really- wanted to punch them in their stupid faces before, but if I want to control myself I just remember I'm better than them. Sorts me out normally and I just have a quiet chuckle at them, instead of maybe getting a bottle in my face.
Plus they've usually got to go home to their drunk fathers that'll give them a good beating no matter what they're tooled up with.
I really just don't want to get stabbed.
A friend of mine starting shouting back in the taxi queue one night and I saw the guy pull something out his pocket and start to run towards us. I pulled him in the taxi which was just as well was there.
