My processor is an AMD 2600+ XP (edited this, it's higher than I thought)
However the clock speed is 1.17 GHz
I'm led to beleive I can jack this up to at least 1.5GHz
My RAM (if relevent) is 256 MB (not sure if thats important).
I know I'd have to do something in the BIOS however I'm not sure what, im a bit of a novice, so if you can help me I'll be very grateful.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks.
Thanks everyone for the help :-)

Spot on. The Motherboard needs PC2700 to run at 166 MHz front side bus as confirmed on the Asus website.

Basically this is saying you need to have PC2700 RAM or higher - if you have PC2100 it won't be fast enough. You'll know if you do or not if your computer starts acting up when the Front Side Bus is set to 166Mhz. Alternatively you could visually inspect the memory sticks to see if they give any indication of their speed.
I can't remember the exact term.
"Memory Speed"
"DRAM Speed"
And change it to 333mhz.
Someone who has the option of shutting down into their BIOS might be able to help.
Caution: according to CPU external frequency setting - system memory can only operate at frequency higher than or equal to 333MHz. Please make sure the DRam maximum frequency is not less than 333MHz.
Advice?
11.5 X 100 and 11.5 X 133 both confirm the figures you've seen so far.
11.5 X 166 = Good
That would explain the limitations too.
This has a front side bus of 166 MHz and the multiplier is locked at 11.5X inside the core of the CPU which is why you can’t change it.
Up the bus speed to 166 MHz from 133MHz and ignore the multiplier in the Bios as it won’t have any effect. The CPU will then be running at 1917 MHz which will be to AMD designed specs for the processor and will not have any thermal implications. The A7V8X motherboard supported this CPU from the start so you should not have to upgrade the bios.
Hope this helps.
