Apparently, the Xbox's hard disk is only going to be only 8MB, which, compared to PS2's 40MB, seems pretty paltry.

Its a long way off. So every where will have cable modem servers and ADSL servers near them. I havent got a cable modem as they arent round here yet or ADSL. I want one though. I dont know what Sony will use they might try to make it compatiable with what ever system you want to use ADSL or Cable.

I will only be getting these if the modem will be compatible with Telewest's Blueyonder network as I already have this system, and it is the only system available in Dundee, I just hope they don't decide to go for BT's ASDL system over here!!

I am also planning on getting the HDD and modem, and I am hoping that Timesplitters 2 is online compatable.

Well it will make it expensive but when all the X-Box owners are getting extra levels, weapons and characters e.t.c for there games from the internet, then all PS2 owners will either move to X-Box or demand they get the HDD and internet. I would say that most people will buy the HDD and modem as this allows a greater experience. All of us on this board could organise a 32 player Quake 5 deathmatch which with out the HDD and modem just would not be possible.
Imagine completing a game, going on the internet and being able to download an extra level or an extra character because you had completed the game.
I think that if Sony dont try to match or beat the X-Box with the HDD and modem then they might lose customers who are looking for a online gaming machine. I for one will get the HDD and modem as soon as it arrives.

Also smething that needs to be considered here, is that console add-ons haven't generally been that successful. Take the Mega CD for example and the 32X, they weren't successful at all.
And I agree with Armatige Shanks, the HDD just makes the PS2 more expensive.

This all leads to the idea that Sony are going to 'suggest' that buying a HD will be a good move...

By having a lot of a games features unavalible to non-HD owerners?

Making the consoles 100 quid extra?...

Which means even with the price drop, it'll cost about 300?

It may do as the X-Box uses the HDD to enable to to keep loading the Disk to the HDD. Therefore the game world can go on and on. As if you are at one point that is loaded up and then the disk keeps loading the rest of the world that you cant see onto the HDD, then you move and you can see the world. The HDD has a much faster transfer rate than a CD drive. I probably havent explained it right as Iam not that good at getting my ideas and thoughts from my head into readable words. But basically the X-Box loads the stuff not seen to the HDD so bigger worlds can be allowed as the HDD has faster transfer rate. If PS2 does this then the game graphics wont get better but the worlds(Playable area) could become bigger.

And there was me hoping that PS2 games could get even better than they already are.

A HDD wont make the games look any better.

Not only does the PS2 hard drive have that 40Gb hard drive where you can download extra levels, cheats etc. but apparently, it can also make the PS2 games look better and smoother. Is this true?
