It's my 21st birthday this year, and as far as material goods go, I can't think of a better way to celebrate it than getting an electric guitar.

There's a long way to go yet (7th of August, I expect cards and a parade), but I've decided it's best to start research as early as possible because I've really got nothing better to do with my life at this moment in time. Well, that's probably a lie, but I'm still going to anyway.

So I need your help. It's going to be impossible for me to choose a guitar without actually playing them first, I know, but I'd like to know what guitars to look out for to begin with.

Your favourite guitars are required. Ideas for mid to high price range needed, I'll probably go for something mid-priced though.

As long as the strings aren't a mile away from the frets and it produces a nice clear sound I'm happy. Also, is there anywhere you can actually listen to clips of guitars being played to see what they sound like? Living in the middle of nowhere doesn't produce much demand for music shops.

All help will be rewarded in the next life. Thanks.

(Recommendations on amps would be nice too, if you could be so kind.)

I only got a Tele because there are no added extras - whatever sound you make is your own. That and the sunburst ones look really cool. Don't expect to play any metal on it though. Ibanez or Washburn for that.

Aye, I've been recommended a Telecaster already, that's definitely one I need to toy with. As for that wood guitar, awesome.

I really have no idea... whatever comes into my head usually. Which would be fantastic if I was any good.

I like bending strings and stuff... um.. I'm really clueless on this.

I edit:LIVE in the armpit of society itself, South West Wales. I'm not interested in buying at the moment, only what guitars are out there and the differences etc.

Yeah, it depends on what sort of sound you are looking for?

What stuff do you play?

Yamaha Pacifica. I'm thinking of getting one, even though I've got a Les Paul and a Tele! Quite cheap, and they play really nicely. What sort of music do you try to play?

I recently got a Fender Squire Stratocaster and it makes a good first guitar. Very good build quality and very nice sound. Cost £250 with a carry bag and NO amp. Got it from P.M.T. in Birmingham. You might wanna check it out if you live anywhere near there. That is assuming you live in the U.K. Huge range and the staff are very helpful and they know what they are talking about.
