There's a long way to go yet (7th of August, I expect cards and a parade), but I've decided it's best to start research as early as possible because I've really got nothing better to do with my life at this moment in time. Well, that's probably a lie, but I'm still going to anyway.
So I need your help. It's going to be impossible for me to choose a guitar without actually playing them first, I know, but I'd like to know what guitars to look out for to begin with.
Your favourite guitars are required. Ideas for mid to high price range needed, I'll probably go for something mid-priced though.
As long as the strings aren't a mile away from the frets and it produces a nice clear sound I'm happy. Also, is there anywhere you can actually listen to clips of guitars being played to see what they sound like? Living in the middle of nowhere doesn't produce much demand for music shops.
All help will be rewarded in the next life. Thanks.
(Recommendations on amps would be nice too, if you could be so kind.)
Just as important, if not more so (everyone will disagree that this is more important, but they obviously dont know what they are talking about if they do) is the amp.
Id recomend a Line 6 Flextone 3. Its a great moddeling amp and is big enough and loud enough for any ammature.
If your just playing music as a hoby in your bedroom, dont waste loads on a flash guitar such as a Gibson Les Paul. Get an epiphone instead and Line 6 Flextone 3. Because its a modeling amp you can get loads of decent tones from the amp rather than the guitar. It can make an £89 squire from argos sound good.
http://drummondo.dmusic.com/music/stream/hifi/128658/.b9cb7ebe/stream.m3u for an example. This is my mate playing his old guitar when his Les Paul got damaged. It doesnt sound brilliant, but its 100x better than if it was through a rubbish amp with no effects etc.
Makes sure you go and try out the guitars and amps before hand. You only really know what you want once you've played it. And go with what you like and feel comfortable playiing yourself becuse its you who will be playing it.
'78 Gibson Les Paul Std
'83 Gibson SG Standard
'92 Fender USA Strat
'81 Fender USA Custom Tele
Some Washburn piece of crap
I still own the SG. Its light yet heavy, metal yet subtle and still looks f-ing cool. Its not the best sounding instrument... it lacks the sustain of the Les Paul (but is a 3rd of the weight), the shine of Tele (tone and volume pots just arent up to it) and the resiliance of the Strat (a guitar I repeatedly tried to demolish to no avail) but it is a great all rounder.
BUT
If you want something truly electric and unique then look no further than the Fender Starcaster. Simply the most astonishing guitar I have ever played.

That's the one he played at the gig we saw. I've got a V. Bit out of condition, bet it sounds great with a bit of maintainence.
And if possible, try to avoid playing with resin-tipped sticks, they leave horrid marks over your skins (see example on my kit http://img190.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img190&image=myview3kn.jpg and stress the wood, so more often than not the sticks split after a few uses.
I had custom made rack-toms as I like a boomy sound, so they're bigger and deeper than the ones that come as standard and only cost me a couple hundred more http://img190.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img190&image=55vu.jpg - the standard ones are good enough, but you don't get that massive godzilla "When the Levee Breaks" style resonance.
Not a guitar, but still like to show off my kit.
Add another 3 cymbals, deeper floor tom and that's ma baby
More metal.
But dont get a fender.
Maybe an Ibanez. Or a Cort.
But i think a les paul would be best for you, better tone, rather then heavyness.
