It's my 21st birthday this year, and as far as material goods go, I can't think of a better way to celebrate it than getting an electric guitar.

There's a long way to go yet (7th of August, I expect cards and a parade), but I've decided it's best to start research as early as possible because I've really got nothing better to do with my life at this moment in time. Well, that's probably a lie, but I'm still going to anyway.

So I need your help. It's going to be impossible for me to choose a guitar without actually playing them first, I know, but I'd like to know what guitars to look out for to begin with.

Your favourite guitars are required. Ideas for mid to high price range needed, I'll probably go for something mid-priced though.

As long as the strings aren't a mile away from the frets and it produces a nice clear sound I'm happy. Also, is there anywhere you can actually listen to clips of guitars being played to see what they sound like? Living in the middle of nowhere doesn't produce much demand for music shops.

All help will be rewarded in the next life. Thanks.

(Recommendations on amps would be nice too, if you could be so kind.)

I was looking at amps today but have no idea about them and was too proud to ask about them in the shop.

" Heh, look at me... I get to work in a guitar shop and wear jeans... how I laugh at you behind my till, dude "

I have a US Strat, £550, sounds gorgeous and a Jap Tele £400, doesn't sound quite as gorgeous but plays like a dream. I used to use a Marshall amp, but now have a Fender Bassman. For a clean, guitar-directly-into-amp sound it's great. If you want clean, Fender is a good option.

I've never played an SG, but think they're ugly, but have played a Les Paul and this was great to play too.

I'd reccomend getting something cheap but nice, like an Epiphone Les Paul or something.

And then buy one of these with it: -

Les Pauls are the daddys.
soundclips would be largely pointless as it depends on amplification and stuff.... too many variables.

Trust me when I say you wont be disappointed with an SG. Just make sure its a Gibson.

I'm trying to find a good song that shows his better playing but the only decent one I can find is this. Its on old version of the song so its only got a short solo in it. You probably wont like this either.

There is also this cover of Hotel California that he did, but that doesnt really count seen as its a cover.

Starcaster eh?

It has the best name anyway.

He was just experimenting while his Les Paul was getting fixed. He does go a little overbord sometimes tho.

Man why do people always over-saturate a clean sound with chorus..?

He's quite good actually. That was the only song he's recorded on his old guitar tho.
