Bring forward one year, I've shed my love for the Xbox and repurchased a Gamecube. Don't get me wrong, the Xbox is a great console, it's just it didn't interest me anymore. I became fed up with "Realistic Racer #121531443" and all of the 'realistic games' that are on offer. Gamecube had that 'thing', the 'thing' that puts the fun into gaming once again. I remember playing the Amiga and loving all the quirky little games like James Pond and Super Frog, all that just isn't really there on say the PS2 or Xbox.
It's these games that are unique, they offer that fun factor that anyone can play. Which leads me onto the title of the post, The Gamecube made me realise that Nintendo really do make fun games, proved by a session on Mario Kart: DD yesterday with my family. Thats right, you heard it, my family for christs sake. The controls were easily adapted to by my Mum and Dad and my brothers and sister enjoyed the frantic racing.
"So what? I play with my GC with my sisters and brothers all the time" I hear you cry, well lets put things straight here, other then myself, my family never ever played with me on my Xbox, the games were just too complicated for them to really understand. With Mario Kart, you just pick up the game, press A and go. There's nothing more to it, it sounds boring on paper, but it's as funny as hell in the game when you manage to plant a green koopa shell in the back of your sisters kart.
Yeah, it might of just been a Christmas thing, but It's made me realise that the Gamecube is a fun console to have and holds the potential for excellent multiplayer gaming.
It's made me realise that the Gamecube is, for once in my life, a console that I will keep until it's replaced with the next one up.
Heres to the future.

Which should be Mario 128.
If they can make it as good as Mario 64 was back when it was released, it will be just the thing they need. Then again, it should have been at the launch instead of near the end.

I see Rare and Retro as sort of in the same boat at the moment.
Tonnes of potential but trying to find their feet in the middle of re-shuffles and the like.
I know what you mean, MP having the depth that I was talking about, but although Retro do go some way to filling Rare's gap, no one will EVER replace them. And you know it! :-P
I guess a lot rests on Kameo.
Conker looks fantastic but is ultimately a reworked N64 classic.
If Kameo can be as good as it could be...

Not a failure, but it'll never be as exciting.
It was just the whole 3D revolution.
And when Nintendo and Rare peaked, packing the perfect combination of fun playability and uncoverable depth into most of their games.
Now Rare's gone and Nintendo have refused to trully commit to one game, instead releasing lots of little mini games.
Not a bad thing, probably the best way to handle the modern market, just never the same as the N64 days. And Nintendo MIGHT surprise us yet, but I'm refusing to get too excited.
Although after all these mini games, they must be itching to to make something really big by now...
> Yeah, but it's out on PS2 as well :\...
Not outside of Japan.
> Fable are some I miss.
I found Fable very very boring.
It promised so much on paper, but when it comes to the final piece, it's boring.
Woah, James Pond is out on the GBA? Nice!
In the meantime, I know Nintendo didn't make this, but Tales of Symphonia is amazing, I'm really enjoying it at the moment.
Retro Studio's are the closest thing Nintendo have to RARE right now, a fantastic developer. Their only draw back is that they are mereley one large team. Expanding is needed. If 2 teams existed at Retro, and considering how relativly quick they are at creating games, we could see a "RARE esq." game every year. Injected with new humour from a new company.
Sadly they are just a single team but they are the greatest western team Nintendo own.
They make games MUCH quicker than RARE.
RARE after all have not pushed one of their major franchises on the X-box. The closest is Conker and he's hardly a giant of his game.
There has been no Perfect Dark, no Killer Instinct and no Banjo Kazooie. The closest you can get to RARE right now is on the GBA and not the X-box.
Still if they were still part of the Nintendo family there would be Perfect Dark and Conker 2 and Banjo by now (at least Banjo confirmed) and Nintendo fans would be far happier.
Nintendo have gifted some really unique games this generation, if you discard Mario Sunshine for a moment they've tried to inject an entire new element to Mario Kart, they've invented a new home console franchise in the form of Pikmin and they've made a real "ART" Zelda game.
Next year's line up looks excellent too. I don't see the Gamecube as a failure over the N64 in the slightest.
