Anyone got any advice, or is long and descriptive good enough?

umm..no.
You tailor your statement to fit the course.
If you're applying for totally different courses with each of your different uni choices, you're in trouble.
Your personal statement means everything, your AS grades mean nothing.
Predicted A level grades are also prime importance.
If your applying for something big like medicine, your personal statement is all that matters, it's what gets you your interview. And once you have your interview, that's what gets you the place. They take it for granted that you'll acheive the minimum grades required.

I was hoping to make a point of emphasising the skills that particularly suit the courses. I don't want to be too vague.
My only skill is 'genius', unfortunately :-{

gaybys, I think the main thing you really need to talk about is your skills more then the course you wish to choose, make a statement that can fit any course.
