I was incensed by a remark made from a staffy at sr today. Reflecting on the whole of the british forces. It really amazes me when some small minded individual thinks that the whole role of the military is to be paid to kill folk. We do not all run forward with guns and we're certainly not mercenaries. In fact I repair radars, radars which keep our coasts safe and radars which are used to save people last time i run forward with a rifle was in 96 im sure.

Sorry for the rant people but lets hear it for the doctors, medics, coastguards, famine relief, public disaster crews, builders, electricians, civil engineers, and bomb disposal crews. our grandads and their dads and their dads before them. Lets hear it for freedom, democracy and all the people who go where no man would ever wish to go.

I love the way that people in the forces keep pointing out that they're 'putting their lives at risk'. What do you want, another dumb little medal? Like we owe them any favours for the job they chose to do.

You know what, people who are prepared to kill people for money do not rate very highly in my opinion.

Tsk, even the people at the frontline aren't there primarily to kill. Just look at Basra - keeping the peace, and more interacting with citizens than rifle-butting them.

wasnt a view on ethics, or of beliefs in freedom. was a divulgence into a mans mental autonomy and his thoughts that the forces are a bunch of contract killers only after medals. Was simply conveying the fact that he is naive to think this, owing to the many wonderful and varied jobs the forces offer many of them low paid and lots volountary in areas of risk.

Someone who has a different view to you isn't always naive, I'm sure, even how much you truly believe you're right.

For example, this war going on. Would I be too wrong to believe that people are going into Iraq to fight because they believe in freedom? I'm sure I'm safe with that.

And now, would I be safe to assume that Iraq is defending itself because, wild guess, it also believes in freedom?

So why are they fighting? I'm terribly confused. Who's freedom is right?

Well AUXRADAR, my only thoughts on this one is that the role of the military is to defend and protect national interests. Without an army, you wouldn't have army doctors. Without a navy, you wouldn't have naval engineers. See where I'm going? You wouldn't be in a job without there being a military. I appreciate the job you do, but it IS one of supporting those people who are "paid to kill". Except, we aren't. We're paid to protect, to defend. I haven't gone around killing random people. If anyone has ever died from a sorty I've been on, then it was because they were a proper, direct threat.

You can't complain about the rest of the military without accepting that you are an accomplice to us. You might not shoot people. But your job is to help us do that.

I agree absolutely and totally, but someone always has to call the storming. Raf are usually there first. Things are not done by want or need rather than its the end cog in corporate works. Man at top alongside a special kinda daddies guy sends ill equipped forces in and now its a mess.

I have no trouble with the majority of the Armed Forces, but wouldn't join them for the world.

It's not that I'd be scared, more that I hear more and more about stupid people in power giving the troops orders to do things and then standing back from taking the blame. Also, I believe there are plenty of ways to solve a problem that don't often get given a chance before the Army storm in and use force.
