Just out of interest, do you have them in your house?

We've got one upstairs and one downstairs, just checked them there. I remember my dad set off our house alarm one night and I was dreaming about an alarm going off then woke up in a panic ready to smash my window in.

For £10 an hour, I'll sit in your house and make sure there isn't a fire about.

We don't have smoke alarms. My parents are lazy cheap asses and I can't be bothered to sort some alarms out as I'm cheap and lazy.

I don't need a smoke alarm. I figure if I'm on fire, I'll know about it.

And if it gets smokey in my room, I'll just shut the door.

The missus suggested that - the girl said "Eh?".

Yes, using a long half-life alpha source, when some gets in the way of the detector the count rate drops vastly, causing the alarm to go off, or sommit like that...

Have one downstairs only. Seems a little silly now I think about it. What if there was a fire upstairs?

We've got one downstairs in the kitchen, it hasn't gone off in ages.

Just tested it, it works still.

Woooooo.

Mine's connected to my LifeLine system. One night there was someone banging on the door and when the missus answered it there was a fireman with an axe in his hand, ready to do the door in. Apparently it had come up on their system that my smoke alarm was going off and they didn't get an answer when they came through on the wall unit (it's a two-way speaker-thing).

After checking, it turned out to be a faulty wire and I had to instruct the LifeLine people to call me by my first name because, strangely, I can sleep through anything but wake virtually instantly if someone says "Tim".
