Rumours surrounding a mini-Gamecube, or "Gameboy Evolution" has been cited for some time. Recently Matt from IGN was asked this question:

The Next Game Boy

matt you seem down on the ds but what about the next game boy do you think that could compete with PSP?

Matt responds: Don't let my rants fool you. I'm not down on the DS. I'm just waiting to see its true potential realized. As for the next Game Boy, which I'll call Game Boy Evolution since this seems to be the popular title for it, I'm extremely optimistic.
Actually, based on things I've heard, the paths of the DS and GBE have intersected already. Sources claim that the idea for the next Game Boy took flight right about the same time GameCube launched. The device was merely supposed to be a portable GameCube. Nintendo was hoping to create a synergy between the two platforms. However, for whatever reason -- probably an inability to miniaturize the GameCube at a consumer-friendly price -- the Game Boy successor was abandoned. Instead, Nintendo opted to use an old piece of tech: a hardware dubbed Nitro that was originally developed to be an update to the Game Boy line during the PS1 era. At former NCL president Hiroshi Yamauchi's suggestion, the tech was enhanced with a second screen and later a touch-sensitive interface. Thus, the DS was born.

What's interesting is that work on Game Boy Evolution is allegedly further along than most of us would probably guess. And more intriguing still, sources claim that Nintendo is once again trying to make the machine a portable GameCube.

If that comes to fruition, I will likely be singing the praises of Game Boy Evolution from the very start. It would be an amazing accomplishment. The machine would have a potential library of 500 games from launch. Imagine being able to play Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Wave Race, and Pikmin on the go. It's a Nintendo fan's dream come true.

That... would be... great. And it would mean the Gamecube would continue to have software developed for it.

WHY? WHY? What on earth is the point? Just so you don't have to have 2 consoles under the TV? It's such a stupid waste of money. It's like Buying a new 14" portable TV to replace your prefectly working 42" plasma. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DO THAT.

Really? Amongst a group of Gamecube owners. What a shocker! I'd imagine a few people would pick up a mini-gamecube at just about £100 around a month or two into the Revolution's lifespan.

It is because I buy Nintendo crap. Edgy does similar thing.

I don't see what the problem is really.

All we're talking about is a handheld that is as powerful as the Gamecube is.

The DS as powerful as the N64, no one is going around calling it a portable N64 are they?

The more powerful the next Gameboy is the better, sure some GC games will be ported over, but there will be far more new games for the system, and more 'handheld style' ones as well.

Stop thinking of a portable Gamecube and starting thinking of Gameboy Advance with 10 times the power, Golden Sun 3 and Advance Wars X anyone?

Also, GBA games are ridiculously expensive.

Perhaps, but I'm not buying one again, since I only ever played it at home, and when I'm at home I can play proper games on my PC.

If we took a poll right now, asking how many people would buy a portable Gamecube for £150, I bet only you would want one.

The fact that you have 3 GBAs, a Pokemon Mini and a load of games you've never played suggests that you would buy anything.

That's not true anymore. There are tonnes of GBA specific games that make the system worthwhile. Minish Cap, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, Wario Ware, Banjo Kazooie, Saburwulf, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Pokemon. etc... etc...

But you've already played the games, recently as well. SNES games were 8-12 years ago. That's quite a long time. GC games will have been about 1 to 2 years ago. You don't play GC games that you bought 2 yaers ago, do you? Why would you on a new gameboy? Just because it was portable? You'd play it for a little bit, realise that you'd already played it through and stop.

The GC games would be too fresh in people's memory. I just don't think it would work
