Many people have waited for years for a console that is not Nintendo with the usual line of of Nintendo games. And the stylus is not going to save the DS. DS just is not powerfull enough to take on PSP. How many years til the GBA2 is released?
60,000 are PS2 sales, totally amazing sales.
40,000 is actually about the amount the GBA would sell in the same period. Also thrown in GBA sales ontop of it and you're closer to 50,000 which is definitly about the amount the GBA sells.
The Nintendo DS shifted around 2 million systems before christmas in Japan, it makes them clear favourites. The PSP didn't have a good launch in comparison (due to shortages) so it is understandable that they'll have decent sales for a few sold weeks/months to come.
But then that'll die down too, and when the new console months have died we'll see who comes out on top.
Anyway it looks like there was an error with the PSP result, it has been moved down to 54,000 sold now.
The Nintendo DS only sold 12,000 less this week and 10,000 less last week. The DS has still sold more than the PSP in January (although it is still pretty much neck and neck). Nintendo have just released a new Nintendo DS game in the form of Yoshi's Touch and Go, it could cause a slight increase in sales. We'll have to see.
Nintendo always have a trump card in Japan in the form of Pokemon, you can expect DS sales to triple when the Pokemon games are released. Although I fear that won't be this year. The likes of Mario Kart, 2 final fantasy titles, Zelda and Animal Crossing should definitly help a lot.
I PERSONALLY believe, particulary in the west, that when Christmas comes around Nintendo's DS will be the thing to own. It'll be clever, new, innovative and it will hit the market well. It could sell in similar regions to the christmas when the Gameboy was the console to own. And that sold silly amounts.
You also need to remember that there isn't just the DS and PSP in the market at the moment. The GBA SP, although selling much less, is still very much alive and kicking. Thanks to Mario Party Advance it has sold over 100,000 systems in Japan.
Here is the year figures for all handhelds, and this means "so far in January":
PSP: 183,028
Nintendo DS: 206,696
Gameboy Advance SP: 102,457
Gameboy AdvanceL 2,639
Nintendo therefore have handheld sales at 311,000 roughly.
And the DS is still in the lead.

The PSP will turn out to completely wipe the floor with DS?
You can hardly deny it's not a possibility.

I'd imagine lack of software is to blame.
And it is January after all.
Although 40,000 is still immense. The Gamecube dreams of that kinda sales figures.
Nintendo had a killer start, selling hundreds of thousands a week till the start of January.
Then the DS fluctuated, it dropped to just over 50,000 whilst this week it is now at just over 40,000 :S
The PSP has been averaging 60,000 a week throughout 2005.
I Need facts, man. Just can't be bothered to look it all up elsewhere...
