I have been thinking about getting a top website address for a while now,
I was wondering what is the best / cheapest domain names for .com or .co.uk, I don't mind spending say £10-20 for it, and I think I’d be able to make the site myself, well I have good knowledge of frontpage, and I know quite a bit of html, i was planning to use my new gismo dreamweaver, but the uploading is confusing on there.

I’ve looked at staghosting.com which seems great, but i haven't a clue

1)how much bandwidth I would need
2)how much each visitor takes in bandwidth roughly
3)and how many visitors I would need to qualify for adsense

No.3 sounds a bit long term but i would still like to know.

i was planning to use the site for my flash movies i have created, a forum and a list of free online games.

now i know that my movies at the moment would take up a extremely small 1500kb considering the length and quality, i plan to make more though, anyways. I know that with staghosting's 2gb monthly bandwidth i could have 2000 (roughly) visitors viewing my movies. that is if i am correct with my calculations.

the problem is, i know good flash movies are extremely popular, and i was planning to submit my movies to several extremely popular sites including my URL somewhere in my movies.

i know if they have already veiwed my movies they might not again but, the only other way is to get one of the sites to host my movies, but they have loads of ads and stuff.

What i mainly want to know is how much is a .com? Will staghosting be enough? How many visitors do i need for google adsense, oh and i remember phi11ip saying something about being strict with the content, well my content is clean as a whistle.

any help is greatly appreciated.

When registering a Domain you have the option to specify name servers when registering with GetDotted, this feature has been in place for months and we hope to give more direct control over GetDotted Domains when our brand spanking new Control Panel is released.

Currently in the process of doing so. Also now a F**th**ts Reseller! (not my choice!)

Ah, I see.

Though, I think if you become a Nominet member, domains are available for £5 per two years. Ever thought about doing that?

All depends whether they are a designated Nominet reseller or not. 123 are and absorb a lot of the costs themselves, I deal direct with Nominet (I'm a Nominet Tag Holder) and renewals are £54 per domain per year

Where do you register your domains?

I've never had this sort of fee from any host. Last week I renewed 4 domains via 123reg.co.uk, and it was only £27.17 for the lot (£5.78 per domain + VAT).

I created a comedy advent calendar back in 2002 of a friend of mine posing naked (he didn't know I had the photo!). It reached 13,340 visitors within 3 weeks! (even had visits from EA games and Rebellion Software) So it's very easy to hit you bandwith without knowing it, even with someting simple.

As for .com addresses, you can generally get these initially for less than £15 for the first 1-2years, after that it becomes expensive. (for example a .co.uk after your bargain buy will become £54pa + admin thanks to the guys at Nominet!) .com's are also a lot more hassle to get transfered unlike a .co.uk as I have recently discovered!

Being a stickler for the correct use of domain suffixes, I'd suggest sticking with the .co.uk as .com is supposed to be reserved for commercial/american sites!;)

It's 5GB a month now, plus thats an uncapped limit.

You won't go over that limit unless your site suddenly becomes very popular, it will take a long time to get your site to the status of 4,000 visitors in one month.

Freeola would be good if they let you change your nameservers for free, unfortunately they use an incredibly slow method and also charge for it, so you'll be paying slightly OTT for the domain name (which would normally be OK), but then have to pay on top to direct the domain to different hosting which will take around a week for them to do going by my last attempt.

Best off using an external registrar if you want to buy a domain and changing the nameservers for free to point to the host.
