Here we go again.

Say "YES, I like it" if you think it is a good idea to have the new "identifiers" under your name. The four identifiers (dare I say "status") are"
Staff
Newbie
Regular
Notable

Vote "NO, I don't like it" if they don't suit you.

Thanks

(When do I get to go up to Newbie?)

Regular status arrives after 300 posts providing they contain over 7500 words.

One Notable is voted in every three months.

I've just realised i just used a silly number of exclamation marks in my last post.

You have my humble apologies.

I have to admit that I was surprised when I was classed as a 'newbie', rather than a 'regular'. I've been posting on here (predominantly on the PS2 forum) for around 6 months now. OK, so I don't post that much on the other forums, but that's because in the day my time is limited, and in the evenings/weekends I'm usually doing something else. I enjoy reading the PS2 forum, as it's all pretty civilised, and usually funny. Much better than a lot of other PS2 forums I've looked at across the Web.

I appreciate that a cut off point has to be made to differentiate a 'newbie' status from a 'regular' etc, but I wouldn't say that 300 posts totalling more than 7500 words really equates to the definition 'regular'. Surely 'regular' also implies a time component? Someone could be a 'regular', not post for two months, and then come back again? Maybe they would be a 'lapsed regular' :-? Also at the end of the day, isn't it really about quality, not quantity? OK, quantity is a lot more straightforward to measure, but could this be an invite to some new users to post stuff all the time, just to improve their classification?

Like I say, I was initially surprised by my 'status' (before I knew the reasoning behind it). But I feel it's an almost pointless tag anyway. After a while, you know who are the people with something interesting, helpful or funny to say, regardless of their status. Would there be any mileage in having some kind of user profile? It could include stats (ie. when they first posted, maybe when they last posted, personal details), and maybe a section that the user could fill in themselves. Wouldn't that be a better way of finding out about other people than generic categories?

I can see your point about "Newbie" being a term that isn't always polite.

But c'mon, it is the universal term for a new person.
You may not be new to the web or gaming, but to this site you are new.
And will be considered new until someone decides otherwise.

I started posting in Jan this year, and since then have come to be known, respected, loved, admired and sometimes feared (eh Sniper?) by these good people.

At first, I was mocked and ignored, but they soon came round to me.
Now they mock and deride me, but I can tell they love me.

And I don't blame them.
