The sales:
Vice City = Stupid amounts of games sold
San Andreas = stupid amounts but not nearly as much as above.
Vice City was the peak, it goes down from now on in unless the franchise is rejuvenated somehow. A.k.A Resident Evil 4.

Well, considering I've been working in a primary school now for the last few weeks, I can say none of them have GTA.
One or two perhaps in Year 6. And when they get to secondary school you get even more.
But year 4 to the young years like Jak and Daxter, Pokemon, Mario... the most adult game I've seen them play is Prince of Persia.
GTA does not sell to kids like Pokemon does.

Yes but kids want to play adult games. GTA sells to kids, like it or not.
I mean the hardcore will lap up whatever they want.

Compare San Andreas to Vice City.
Go on.
Although, and I hate to keep saying this, Adult gamers don't play handhelds. Because handhelds are "sad". Simple.
Pokemon. The sooner it comes out the sooner we can leave this silly PSP bussiness behind.

Won't be quite the same though will it?!
As for falling in popularity - err, have you actually seen how many copies each subsequent edition has sold?!!
