I'm getting a DVD player and I would like to know what pluging an amplifier into it would do to the sound. I already have the sound coming out of my stero for my current DVD player. Would it increase the bass or what?

Thank you for that. I'm looking on Comet.co.uk and the amplifier don't have any speakers with it. I assume I have to buy those seperate?
It would amplify the different channels of audio making it easier to recognise different sounds more clearly and, depending on the number of speakers and their quality, you can more easily distinguish the source of sounds, creating surround sound.
You plug stuff into an amp so that you can output to more speakers.
Typically:
DVD player -> Amp -> 5 Speaker surround sound.
