I said a month ago I would try an idea that I thought of for SR. I asked permission and I have completed it, on the left is the options for were the user is, (eg forum) also the whole list is still on the page but the forum topic size is smaller.

whad do you think?

We are not really interested in MSN.

And don't get distracted from your GCSE's.

Laurence has a good IRC system (our thanks to Reaper for bringing it to our attention). Webmaster will be checking this out carefully and it is bound to take a while.

In the mean time er-no. How did you get on last night?

When you have something to show us (all those on FOG) let us know. I'll be very interested to take a look.

But there's no mad rush, so do your GCSE's first.

True

But I think it will balance out. A lot more people search for chat on the internet than search for forums or discussions. So in general I think it will bring in more people.

I don't see it affecting the forums too much - each to his(/her) own, etc. Chats and forums can work well together, and no-one's forcing people to use either one. There will be people who stick to only forums, but others will prefer chat. Doesn't mean they'll be "stolen" from here though

If we get a chatroom, we will have to see if, in the longrun, it works.

For the health of the forums.

You don't go in to a chat room to talk to your mates you use a messenger service like msn or yahoo. You go in chat rooms to meet new people with different points of view from yourself. If its private you will all have the same view.

1. This will be for all Specail Reserve visitors. Over 60,000 new visitors on this site last month alone.

2. Hey - it's what people want. Some want chat rooms, some want forums.

Me - I prefer the pace of the forums and the fact that what you write does not disappear into oblivion the moment after you write it. Clearly too many people in one chat room will not work. And there is only so much "Hi wasssuupp" that you can do.

I've had MSN messenger fail on me more than CC's applet. It's never once crashed on me, and is constantly being improved. Anyway, even when the applet doesn't work (trying to access through a proxy, java disabled, whatever), the CGI client works for -everyone- I've spoken to

I think more people should use MSN for that purpose. A chatroom/messenger service is good, but isn't MSN more reliable than one embedded in SR?

IM services embedded in to webpages seem to be more unreliable still, and browser specific - MSN messenger isn't that big a download, and a java chat it just as good - just create your own room with your friends. Suppose thats easier if you have a seperate IRC client

You don't want to meet people with different points of view? You're perfectly welcome to your an instant messenger, but I always talk to my mates on IRC now. Anyway, no-one's forcing you to use it.
