A subject that is close to my heart and my purse at the moment. I'm not asking for any advice from anyone. I will be getting married, and it will end up costing somewhere between 5 and 8 grand for that one day.

Obviously I'm being frugal. From different sources I've found average wedding price stated as anywhere from £12,000 to £18,000. I'm hoping to be around £6,000. But still, when else would you spend that much money on celebrating one day? and is it worth it? I'm interested in being a married woman, not in having a huge party where everything is calculated to impress wealthier relatives and friends. I've suggested having a small wedding with My Mum and Dad and Grandma, and The Ogre's Mum, Dad, Grandie and Sister, but nothing doing, the Ogre keeps saying oh but we have to invite [insert random relative/friend/stranger]. My Mum and Dad keep saying oh but we have to invite [insert random parent's friends I've never met].

but my mind just boggles at the amount of money we will be spending. If the wedding lasted for 10 hours, that's £600 an hour. That's £10 a minute. Thats stupid money. I could buy a CD for every minute for 10 hours for that money. I could buy a car, or have 10% deposit (for this area) on a very nice house.

Still I have the final laugh, spoilt brat (and only child) that I am, my parents are paying for it.

My cousin spent over £30,000 on his wedding!!

I think its a waste. Just hire a hall and stick some buttys on a plate rather than having a huge sit down meal for the guests. YOu can invite who you want then an not worry about cost.

Oh yeas these special occasions can be pricey indeed.

My dads cost about £8000 and that was money well wasted as 4 months later the marrige had ended. However it was a beautiful day.

If i was to ever marry i would opt for something small, it would be a registry office and a small afterdo. I think the day is about the 2 people in question, and them making their vows to each other. All the other stuff is material and in my eyes money that can be invested in something else. Thats just me though.

It depends. Are you religious (I know you're not anymore, but it's a general question)? Do you want a big day to remember? Do you have to prove your commitment to your partner by spending thousands on one day, when you could hire a bouncy castle for a year with that money?

Personally, I'm never going to get married because it's mostly a traditional religious ceremony, and I've got no interest in that. BUT, I have been with my girlfriend for nearly 5 years, and I've got no intention of leaving her. The best thing is that she's not interested in getting married either, so at least we know that there won't be any problems there! I even told her Mum that I wasn't going to marry her daughter, and explained why, and that she's welcome to try out our bouncy castle whenever she wants.
