Obviously it varies from provider to provider, but im looking for a ball park figure.
:)

Just so you don't get confused, that should have read:
"It depends on how far away from the exchange you are. The further away you are the higher your ping will be."
if you want a good ISP try blueyonder they are upgrading their broadband connections so that you get 50% faster download

No it wont hurt.
Still, won't hurt to at least apply for 1Mb now, will it?

If you could only get 512K when BT extended the range of 512K then there is no way you will get 1Mb. BT extended the range from 5.5km to something like 6-6.5km, if this is why you had 512K then 1Mb is out of the question, also might explain your speeds being a bit slower than expected.
You know, I might just give 1MB a shot. I'm still under BT contract now though, but hopefully that isn't a problem.

Every ADSL enabled exchange has 1Mb. What I meant is that if the exchange has had ADSL for a long time then the amount of bandwidth available at the exchange may have been nearly all used when only 512K connections were available. If say 1/4 of the people went to 1Mb then the amount of bandwidth available will be less than what is needed to keep every connection running at maximum. So BT have had to upgrade lots of exchanges with more bandwidth. So if you did see your speeds drop since late October last year then this could of been the problem.
You could try for 1Mb as the checker is not always correct. Do you actually know how far your phone line is in terms of distance to the exchange? Because 1Mb needs your phone line length to be less than 3.5km long.

Well I 512K I use to be able to get 60kb/s all the time, so 55-58kb/s is not too bad. If your exchange is populated then with 1Mb connections some exchanges became too crowded and contention came into it. BT have been upgrading these exchanges so if you did notice a slow down then that could be the issue.
Also if you connection is not tweaked(look at a previous post below) then this has major effects, especially if the values set are actually values for old 56K dial-up. I have seen people only getting 30kb/s and then tweaking the connection and getting double the speed and using the full 512K connection.
I've recently seen this increase as I could usually only download at around 40-45Kbps.
Maybe they've done more upgrades on our exchange...
